La Sonata modello The Template Sonata for solo piano by Howard J. Buss is dedicated to pianist James Helton. The music traverses a wide rage of moods and sonic atmospheres. The composer designed a template of meter changes derived from the numerical series in mathematics codified by the medieval Italian mathematician, Leonardo Fibonacci. In this adaptation of the Fibonacci sequence each number represents a quarter note and is expressed in the succession of meters 4/4, 3/4, 5/4, 4/4, 4/4, 5/4, 3/4, 5/4, 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, and 5/4. This series of measures is repeated throughout the work. While each 13-bar segment implies that the music fits into a particular metrical scheme, the composer exerts independence in a variety of ways, such as with phrasing that sometimes ignores the underlying structure. Buss states: This metrical template was at times useful, but often seemed arbitrary and counter to the thrust and development of the musical material. My challenge was to find a way to work with the template while using its rigidity to spark creative solutions. Although the music evolves within the template, my ultimate goal was that the listener be unaware of the structural underpinnings and simply enjoy the beauty of the music..

Beethovens Birthday Boogie is a tribute to one of the greatest composers in musical history: in 2020 the music world will mark the 250th anniversary of his birth. This piano piece works in several Beethoven themes from the Fifth and Ninth Symphonies, presented inthe guise of a Boogie. It begins with what may be the most famous four-note motif in classical music, the musical symbol representing Beethoven. This is immediately followed by the theme from the Ode to Joy, this time in ternary rhythm, accompanied by aplayful Boogie-Woogie figure; another musical quotation is then followed by a brilliant cadenza. An imperfect cadence ending on the dominant leads into a solemn version of the familiar Happy Birthday tune in the style of Beethoven, then the piece ends with two characteristic jazz chords.

BachScholar Edition Vol. 48 – Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (4 pages) presents a rich, romantic-style concert arrangement of Bach’s famous chorale setting from Cantata No. 147. The most well-known piano version, by Myra Hess, is a literal transcription from the cantata, which not only presents several awkward and difficult technical challenges, but can easily sound dry and technical on the modern piano. Hall’s arrangement is refreshingly different and original and less difficult to play than Hess’ version, making it more accessible to pianists and listeners. Hall transcribes Jesu to the lush, romantic key of D-flat major, which results in a deeper sound (a tri-tone lower than the original G major) and is easier to play and has more idiomatic fingerings due to the use of all five black keys.
