Three Strides of Light is inspired by the light and its behaviour in different circumstances, appearances and surroundings. The work is in three movements, but they are played together attacca. The first movement starts off with a headstrong theme on the left hand. This motif has persistent momentum, like a train, and one could think of it as the rays of a setting sun. The beams are straight and relentlessly penetrate our eyes. The seven-bar repetition on the left hand supports this mental image, until the repetition ends and a new thematically central motive starts to emerge, bringing new kind of texture for the last rays and dance of the setting sun. At the end, the light vanishes into the night. Second movemement, slow rubato, depicts the first rays of the rising sun, they drop behind a morning cloud into the day, growing, developing and becoming yet faster. Eventually the day opens up in all of it sunny glory. The music leads us towards the third movement, in which one bathes in the rays of the sun. The repetative motive of the first movement returns, but by now it has been transformed into something else. A pensive quintuplet-passage emerges, paving ground for the final themes of the work. The ending of the work is thick in sound, depicting the relentless glare of the sun and the heat sun creates. Within the entire work, one can imagine to have gone through a whole 24-hour period on the sea, in which the three strides of light are apparent in different parts of the day.

'Two pieces of scherzo character in triple time flank a slower movement in duple time. The first burlesque entitled 'Quarrel' is Márta's piece, Nov. 1908, is a dispute between two opposing characters, with grimaces and taunts. The second burlesque, with the subtitle 'Slightly Tipsy' or 'A bit drunk' is one of Bartók's ingenious programme music miniatures, with characteristic performance indications. The figure appearing in a stumbling rhythm begins to sing indifferently, then continues ruvido (coarsely). By the end of the middle section, to be played in dry tone, our hero collapses completely, and takes leave as a pitiful figure, like the wooden puppet after the dance in The WoodenPrince ballet. ...Finally, the titleless third burlesque, Molto vivo, capriccioso, also stimulates the imagination: one can detect in it the grotesque rush of the last bagatelle, 'My Dancing Sweetheart,' just like the Wooden Prince dance. Giovanni Maria Bononcini (1642-1678) published in Bologna in the last year of his life, i. e. in 1678 a collection of 24 movements for two violins and basso continuo entitled Arie e Correnti a tre (Op. 12). In agreement with the sonata da camera traditions of the early Baroque the collection is a series of 9 two-movement and 2 three-movement sonatas. It was published again in London in 1701 with the title Ayres in 3 parts. Four years later a revised edition of the work appeared, also in London, which bore the title Bononcini's Aires for two Flutes and a Bass. The edition published in Amsterdam without date, but presumably around 1725, with the title Preludes, Allemandes,Sarabandes, Courantes, Gavottes et Gigues á 2 Flutes ou Violons et une Basse, is essentially a reprint of the London edition. The present edition contains this posthumous revised variant. Territorial restrictions may apply. Please ask before ordering.
