This latest addition to the Novello Handel Edition is the first complete, modern edition of the composer's longest oratorio, prepared after examination of all known contemporary sources, both music and word-books. The publication embodies the complete text known to have been performed at the Covent Garden premiere in 1743, as well as identifying the later shorter versions and additions performed regularly by Handel, and an Appendix of all further variants created by him and performed during his lifetime. It is thus a comprehensive and flexible edition for between four and eight soloists, with an abundance of choral writing and some of Handel's most sublime writing for voices. Premiered in London in 1733, Handel's 'magic opera? 'Orlando? is based on a libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capeci that derives indirectly from Ludovico Ariosto's epic poem 'Orlando furioso?.This subject was very popular at the time and was frequently set to music, e.g. by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Agostino Steffani and Joseph Haydn. The title role of Orlando is the last one that Handel wrote for the celebrated castrato Senesino. Several stunning stage effects intended to illustrate Zoroastro's sorcery call for sophisticated baroque stage machinery.The vocal score has been adapted and carefully amended in keeping with the revision of the complete edition volume. The engraving and presentation of the former vocal score (BA 4027-90) have also been meticulously revised in many details. However the pagination stays the same so that both vocal scores are compatible with each other. For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11, 1727, Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was, according to all reports, one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received, and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem #2 ('The King Shall Rejoice'), although less well-known than Anthem #1, is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro, brilliant and elegant rather than pompous - a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him' - and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. Handel's three-act opera 'Sosarme, Re di Media' (HWV 30) was performed for the first time in 1732 with star castrato Senesino in the title role. The plot centres on a family conflict over the succession to the throne. This edition also contains the recitatives written for the early two-act version 'Fernando, Re di Castiglia' which the composer did not complete. In addition, the early versions of three arias which do not belong to “Fernando” are included.
