I Puritani is the last work of Vincenzo Bellini: composed in nine months, from April 1834 to January 1835 (a gestation unusually long for that time), was performed for the first time in Paris, Théâtre Italien, 24 January 1835. During this period, the dramatic structure suffered radical transformations: initially structured in two acts, the work was divided into three acts just before the premiere, but on the eve of the first performance, and immediately after that, the excessive length of the title imposed the cut of three pieces and other minor sections. Simultaneously with the release for Paris, Bellini prepared a version designed for a planned exhibition for Naples at Teatro S. Carlo, whose protagonist had to be Maria Malibran and in which the part of Riccardo had to be supported by a tenor. The exhibition did not take place, as the score came late in Naples: the Neapolitan version was rediscovered and performed only in the eighties of the twentieth century. The new Critical Edition is based on the autograph, on the libretto of the first performance and on four manuscript copies produced in the context of the Théâtre Italien in the first months of life of the work, three of which contain autograph interventions (these sources are now kept at the Biblioteca Comunale in Palermo, at the Museo Civico Belliniano in Catania, at the Archivio Storico Ricordi in Milano and at the Staatsbibliothek zur Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin). Yeomen of the Guard is a more 'serious' Gilbert and Sullivan opera and this perhaps accounts for it's original lukewarm reception, as it ran contrary to audience expectation. Set in the Tower of London in the sixteenth century, the libretto concerns a jester, Jack Point and his girl Elsie, who plot to aid a war hero who is sentenced to die in the Tower. That hero, Colonel Fairfax, has been condemned to die by a relative who stands to inherit his fortune. Fairfax wants to marry someone just before his execution, so that his bride will inherit instead. Jack sets Elsie up to marry Fairfax, thinking it will do no harm. However, Fairfax escapes and remains in the area in disguise. He spots Jack trying to woo Elsie and gives a demonstration of the proper way to woo, winning Elsie's affections himself. Composed in 1818 on commission from an unknown individual in Lisbon, Adina was left to languish some years until its premiere in 1826, with a single performance in that city remaining virtually the only one on record until the opera's revival in 1963. The present vocal score is based on the critical edition of the orchestral full score prepared by Fabrizio Della Seta and published by the Fondazione Rossini of Pesaro in collaboration with Casa Ricordi. This Edition reconstructs for the first time the structure of the autograph score, which reflects the collective contributions of at least five different hands: having composed only four entirely new numbers and repurposed another three from Sigismondo, Rossini relied upon collaborators and copyists for the remainder of the music. Della Seta's detailed examination of this fundamental document (housed at the Fondazione Rossini) together with an informed assessment of the secondary sources, including a complete manuscript copy (housed at the British Library in London), various manuscript vocal parts with Rossini's autograph interventions (housed in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels), and the first edition of the vocal score published by Ricordi between 1855 and 1859, additionally reveals how the libretto printed in Lisbon for that single historic performance in 1826 differed substantially from the narrative disposition of the autograph score, with ample cuts and modifications (among those the suppression of the Aria Alì and the addition of a Coro). Par NAOUMOFF EMILE. These songs by Emile Naoumoff are squarely in the tradition of French lied composition such as by Gabriel Fauré. Here, Naoumoff chose texts by late 19th-century French lyricists: Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Emile Verhaeren, Charles Baudelaire and René-François Sully-Prudhomme. In their elegance and suppleness, the four songs sound typically French. As they are all easy to sing and have not been composed 'against' the voice, they are perfectly suited for both music lessons and concert programmes. Naoumoff was born in Sofia in 1962. At the age of eight, he began his career as a pianist and composer; he was a student of Nadia Boulanger for ten years until her death. At the age of ten, Naoumoff composed and performed his own piano concerto under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin. He then received numerous awards and prizes and gave performances as highly acclaimed pianist. Today, Naoumoff lives and works as an associate professor at the School of Music of the Indiana University at Bloomington.
