Kinetic Poem is, after two piano concertos and Dialogues for piano and orchestra, Merilainen's fourth and latest work (1981) in which the piano plays a concertante role. The piano-orchestra relationship is synergetic: small motifs, which draw their material from the spectacular solo part, are rotated by the orchestra and change their form, only to he absorbed back into the relentless solo stream.
