This piano suite of four short pieces, written between 1915 and 1916, illustrates Griffes' evolving tastes in incorporating modern devices into his compositions. Filled with many memorable, evocative, and pianistically satisfying moments, the pieces require power, agility, and finesse, as well as musical sensitivity. The suite begins with 'The White Peacock,' a sensuous depiction of the exotic white bird. The second work, 'Nightfall,' captures the stillness of dusk, before gaining excitement and swirling to two powerful climaxes. Par TUUR ERKKI-SVEN. New and corrected edition 2021! Erkki-Sven Tüür really exploits the potential of the piano in this three-movement sonata for piano (1985). The opening and closing movements are based on flowing, pianistic arpeggios, whereas in the slow middle movement the harmonies are brought out by means of harmonics reinforced an octave higher by the piano's sounding board and pedal. Premiered by Kalle Randalu at the University of Tartu in 1986, the sonata shows traces of minimalism and impressionism. Par LINJAMA JYRKI. Jyrki Linjama composed Sonata da chiesa I for piano as a commission from the Carinthischer Sommer festival in Austria and premiered by Juho Pohjonen at Ossiach Abbey in summer 2010. The title alludes to the sonata tradition of the Baroque at its weightiest and most solemn. The polyphonic church sonata with its strict adherence to form for a long time occupied an important role in the liturgy (as distinct from the sonata da camera). Linjama?s modern application of this tradition articulates features of the liturgy: breathing, bells, shades of darkness and light. The closed Miserere of the opening movement opens out in the middle movements to let in light, which the angelic song of the last movement once again encloses in translucent twilight. Par CASABLANCAS BENET. Epigramas Cervantinos was commissioned by pianist Marta Espinós and the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musica (CNDM) in Madrid. With an approximate duration of 12:30 minutes, the work responds to the author's admiration for the work of Miguel de Cervantes and to the artistic complicities established with Marta Espinós, to whom the work is dedicated. The pieces that make up this triptych are intended to evoke some of the expressive types and characters that we recognise in Cervantes' prodigious legacy - from Don Quixote to the delightful Exemplary Novels - covering a wide range of emotions that range from burlesque to pages of a melancholic and contemplative nature, passing through more impulsive passages and others of conspicuous rhythmic vivacity. The profound charge of humanity that these texts exude is translated into a highly contrasted and colourful piano treatment, at times brilliant and not without virtuosity.
