This is why it has not been included in Rota's catalogue of works until now. Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the ?École de Paris?. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the ?Association of Young Polish Musicians?, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de l?Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore ? homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak?s enchanting drama music. Beethoven's Sonata Op. 10/1 was composed over a long period between 1795 and 1798 in which the composer could not decide for quite some time whether to go for four or three movements. Beethoven considered two piano pieces in C minor (WoO 52 and 53) as potential third movements before the finale until he eventually decided in favour of a three-movement version without minuet or scherzo. Par MOMPOU FEDERICO. Composed by Federico Mompou, Preludes Pour Piano is a set of four pieces with two hands for upper intermediate players. It covers the Preludes n° 1 to 4 written in 1928. Each of these preludes is written on one to four pages and can be played separately. The first one is short, to be played like a romance, with chords only. The second one lasts longer and features distinctive parts, starting with an energetic section followed by a sudden musical burst, the rest of it being slower until the animated close. The third prelude is quite slow and very expressive while the last piece of this book is quite short and simple. Federico Mompou was a Spanish pianist and composer. With his 'Lyric Pieces?, Edvard Grieg was writing a kind of poetic piano diary: between 1867 and 1901 he composed 66 short character pieces, published in ten books. Pieces such as 'Wedding Day at Troldhaugen?, 'March of the dwarfs? or 'To the spring? are among Grieg's best-known works. Alongside these fairly virtuosic pieces there are also numerous simpler dances and melodies that can be played at an early stage when learning the piano. Until now only five single books were available from Henle (HN 619, 627, 644, 681, 713), but now we are publishing the complete collection in a collected volume, with fingerings by the Norwegian pianist and Grieg specialist Einar Steen-Nøkleberg. / Piano
