Composer's Note: The Lullaby from The Unicorns arose from an opera libretto I commissioned from John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006) in the late 1960s. In his story two unicorns are discovered in a remote part of Africa. Both the East and West want to obtain them for research so they send out rival expeditions. The Western technique is to lure the unicorn with a young girl singing a lullaby. Both East and West capture unicorns but the mythical animals escape in the end. I never completed the opera but I made a six-movement suite from it called The Unicorns. There are three songs and three instrumental numbers and the first performance was given with Elisabeth Soderstrom and Solna Brass under Lars-Gunnar Bjorklund at Ekensbergskyrkan, Solna, Sweden on 31 October 1982. This version was recorded and my arrangement of the three songs for voice and piano was recorded by Marilyn Hill Smith. The career of the Lullaby continued with a version for clarinet and piano, which I premiered with Jack Brymer aboard the Sea Princess in the Mediterranean on 29 September 1986. The oboe version was for Sarah Francis, and Duke Dobing and I have recorded it for flute an piano. Lullaby can be played with a variety of solo instruments and is also available for piano left hand and piano solo.

Carter Pann writes, the piece might have been titled Three Improvisations, but there is an expressive inertia baked in to these works which makes them truer as rhapsodies. This description tells us much about the work, whose movements are an enterprising tango, a bombastic central movement with virtuosic thrust, and a and a hymn heard from afar without any sense of marked time.Three Rhapsodies was commissioned by the American Composers Forum with complete support from the Thelma E. Hunter Fund. The premiere performance took place in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York by pianist Marina Lomazov. As with all of my piano works, this was very much an at-the-piano compositional experience. As a pianist I cannot imagine writing a solo work away from the instrument (though at times that would be quite convenient). The whole work explores a palette of impassioned emotions – sometimes veiled, sometimes emboldened, or even outrageous at times. There are technical freedoms in each movement, allowing the pianist to stretch their interpretive inclinations to great lengths. In this way the piece might have been titled Three Improvisations, but there is an expressive inertia baked in to these works which make them truer as rhapsodies. The first movement is a tango with real wanderlust. The second reminds me of Rachmaninoff’s Polka de W.R. in its bombast, but also Chopin’s sixteenth prelude with its sheer virtuosic thrust. The third is a hymn heard from afar with no rhythmic drive, only sheened sonority.

Known professionally as Hauschka, composer Volker Bertelmann has catapulted himself into the top tier of instrumental composers. This is proven, not least, by the Oscar nomination which he received for his soundtrack to the2016 film Lion.
In his latest album A Different Forest, released on 8 February 2019 at Sony Classical, Hauschka takes the forest as a contrast to the urban life. The names of the pieces, such as 'Talking To My Father',testify equally that those natural experiences are metaphorical of the important things in life.
For this album Hauschka renounces entirely his prepared Piano. The existential questions which he musically poses, however, donot lose their intensity, but rather, without the alienation by electronic elements, gain urgency.
In addition to the 13 LP tracks, this songbook for Piano also contains three exclusive arrangements of previouslyunreleased songs: 'Collecting Stones', 'Loosing Directions' and 'Misty Day'.
Titels zoals Talking To My Father tonen dat deze ervaringen in de natuur metaforen zijn voor belangrijke gebeurtenissen in het leven. In seinem neusten Album A Different Forest“ am 08.

The Belgian composer Nicholas Lens presents extremely varied etudes, exercises and simple phrases with wonderfully telling titles from poetry and everyday world for children and adults. For the most part the studies are tonal and simple and have no constructed line. They are not based on any educational concept but leave the musical dramatization to the pupils and teachers: 'Notes and rhythms are just notes and rhythms, they do not have that many rules, they do not have any pretension, they are just tools for you to use to express what you want to share'.

According to the distinguished musicologist Juan Bautista Varela, the Galician Treboada is a musical term out of the songbook, as its sense is merely musical. From a lexicographical point of view it means thunderstorm, storm, squall, etc. It is almost an onomatopoeic sense, due to the great noise that the bass drums, fundamental elements of the Treboada, make. The Treboada is played always on the eves of celebrations or feasts and it is played by three or five bass drums, one or two Galician bagpipes and a drum. The dispersion area of the Treboada is much reduced, according to the poet and essayist Eliseo Alonso Rodriguez, it comprises the parishes of Forcadela and Estas, both of them belong to the town of Tomino. Xose Hernique Rodriguez Portela, from Tomino, says that they also play it on the feast of the Virgin of St. Mary of Tomino eve (Virgen del Alivio de Santa Maria de Tomino). I owe him the idea of this piece, because Xose Henrique described to me how the bass drums sound in the distance, early in the morning, like great roars along with blank bullets that are shot every time a particular house donates money for the feast and they gradually approach the house until it trembles. He sang the melody I wrote and he confessed he had heard it not long ago in the rehearsal of a popular folk group where there was only a percussionist and a Galician bagpipe player, as with the drums it is difficult to appreciate the bagpipe. I also mix the Treboada with an Alborada, because in Galicia almost all the churches have loudspeakers that play this melody at around nine o'clock in the morning, the same time that the Treboada of Tomino starts playing. Luminary was composed to honor the 72nd birthday of pianist and teacher Bennett Lerner. The word luminary has two meanings: 1 (archaic), a natural light-giving object or source of light, especially the sun or the moon, the most important natural sources of light for the planet Earth; and 2, a person who inspires or influences others. Bennett Lerner is one of the latter and has inspired and influenced a myriad of musicians, especially pianists and composers. He is also a great advocate of new music. Luminary has three main sections, recalling a traditional concerto. It begins with fast repeated notes, which portray rays of light penetrating the atmosphere of the earth. The second section is peacheful and slow and the third section returns to the opening high energy. The piece contains a small hint of Southeast Asian music, but of unclear geographical origin. Luminary was commissioned by the Ansin Foundation, with the gracious support of the South Dakota Symphony and the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. It was first performed by the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Dariusz Mikulski, conductor, with Christopher Janwong McKiggan as piano soloist, on June 17, 2016. Both the composer and the pianist were students of Bennett Lerner.

NORA’S DANCE is a jazz-influenced rag from 1921, and among the only surviving compositions by Nora Douglas Holt. A charming and exciting work rejuvenated by Lara Downes’ 2021 recording for the Rising Sun label, the rag is both a fun 2 minutes for pianists and audiences, and also a fascinating time capsule. Composed several years after Scott Joplin’s death, and several years before the Charleston pervaded popular music, NORA’S DANCE blossoms with the energy and jazz harmony starting to emerge as The Roaring 20’s, using ragtime and stride as the seed for pianistic style. My own life in music has been driven by a quest to find strong female role models, trails to follow, shoulders to stand on. In Nora Douglas Holt, I find an inspiring example of creativity, independence, and resilience – with a dash of troublemaking. She was a free spirit, a force of nature, and she lived a fascinating and eventful life on her own terms. She reinvented herself through five marriages and at least as many careers. From her beginnings at the piano at age four, she explored many avenues of musical expression – performing, composing, music journalism, broadcasting, teaching – all with inventiveness, style, and zeal. She made the most of the Roaring ’20s, as an artist, socialite, jetsetter, muse, and patroness of the Harlem Renaissance. In 1921 she started an independent arts journal called “Music and Poetry,†where the charming piano solo Nora’s Dance was first published. I think the piece captures beautifully, in a little under 2 minutes, the energy and excitement of those heady years. In 1926, Nora left New York to travel the world, performing in nightclubs throughout Europe and Asia. She put her belongings in storage before she left, and when she came back she discovered that many of her things had been stolen, including more than 200 of her musical compositions. She never composed again. When the Depression hit, she moved out to Los Angeles, where she studied music education at USC, taught music in the LA public schools, and opened her own beauty salon. She returned to New York in the ’40s and worked as a music critic for several major newspapers, then launched yet another career, this time in broadcasting. Her popular radio concert series “Nora Holt’s Concert Showcase†broadcast to New York’s classical music audience, with a focus on Black composers and performers.Ahead of her time, larger than life, full of ideas…. I am so pleased to introduce you to the feisty and free spirited Nora Douglas Holt!
