Dating back to ca. 1770, Harmoniemusik was originally conceived for wind orchestras and was mainly played at open-air concerts as Tafelmusik (table music). Though the composers themselves typically adapted their own music for such purposes, this Rossini masterpiece, The Barber of Seville, was not and is beautifully rendered here for saxophone quartet.

Minimax was premiered in 1923 in the original version for string quartet at the Donaueschinger Musiktage and edited in 2014 by Christoph Enzel for saxophone quartet. The 6 parodies of military music perfectly match the saxophone, the wit and spirit of the compositions can be transferred without restriction. Some coarseness works almost better on the saxophone than in the original.

The Pavane for a Dead Princess is considered to be one of Ravel's most popular works. The solemn and stately court dance strutting along in an even pulse turns into a melancholic, yet not sombre dirge. The arrangement on hand is in line with the orchestral version written by Ravel himself in 1910 and constitutes part of the series Ravel for Saxophone Quartet including publications of, among others, Ma Mère L'Oye (Mother Goose), Trois Chansons (Three Songs), and Le Tombeau de Couperin.

“Czardas is a piece for a Saxophone quartet (SATB) by Vittorio Monti. This composition, arranged by Armando Ghidoni, lasts 5?30 minutes and has a name taken from a Hungarian National Dance. Divided into six distinctive parts, this piece is really cheerful and energetic. It requires some really strong technique as some sections are really fast. - Lento cadenza a piacere / Largo Maestoso - Vivace - Lento Maestoso - Vivace - Piu Mosso - Presto Czardas is the most famous piece by Vittorio Monti which was also arranged for other instruments: Violin and Guitar, String quartet and accordion among others. It is a really entertaining work to play that will definitely be enjoyed by the audience during a recital. Vittorio Monti is an Italian composer, mandolinist and violinist who worked in many gypsy orchestras.â€.

For Ravel, the year 1917 was marked by his mother's death and the death of many of his friends who lost their lives in World War I. Hence, the suite he finished that same year can be considered as an elegy. Due to its classical, sonatina-like character, this piece does not radiate an atmosphere of mourning, but rather a light, cool serenity. This arrangement for SATB saxophone quartet is faithful to the original orchestral version. Titles: I. Prélude * II. Forlane * III * Menuet * IV. Rigaudon.
