Telemann's setting of Psalm 121 I lift up mine eyes to the hills reveals him to be an admirer of French music. Constructed on the example of a grand motet, each of the movements is patterned after the French model: the model of an overture for the first movement, the echoes of a chaconne in the second, the dotted gigue rhythms of the Canarie in the third. In addition there is the lively exchange between choir and solo ensemble, and much more. The music is full of poetic imagery, whenever the occasion arises, as at the very beginning with the words Ich hebe meine Augen auf, or in a later passage with the text Siehe, der Hüter Israel schläft noch schlummert nicht (Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep). C. P. E. Bach's nine-movement Magnificat (1749), the first great vocal work from his Berlin years, is among the most magnificent sounding, in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the Hymn to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur, dignity, polyphonic and concertante choral movements, sensitive (empfindsam) and expressive arias, a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.), which is almost one hour in duration, would be well suited, for example, as the central work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concert programme. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3321500.

Schubertâ??s Mass in E-flat major is the last of his six settings of the Ordinarium Missae (Mass ordinary) and also his most important work in this genre. The mass is full of color and drama, infused with the spirit of confession. For many choirs, it is on the wish list of those works they would like to sing someday. But what happens if you donâ??t have enough singers, money is tight, and your venue is on the small side? Here the experienced arranger and orchestral musician Joachim Linckelmann has a great solution. His version for soloists, choir and chamber orchestra requires only 7 winds rather than the original 13. The string parts, while identical to the original, can now also be scaled back. The vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are completely untouched by the arrangement, so that the vocal scores and choral scores of the Carus Urtext edition can also be used for performanceâ?¢,A large-scale work now arranged for smaller choirs â?¢,13 winds of the original version reduced to 7 instrumentsâ?¢,Vocal scores and choral scores of the original version can still be usedâ?¢,carus plus: The work (original version) is available in the app carus music, the Choir Coach, as well as in our Carus Choir Coach series (audio only).. Among the sacred works by Saint-Saens there are just two settings of the mass: the Messe de Requiem op. 54 from his middle period (1878), and the Mass op. 4 dating from 1856. This was first performed on 21 April 1857. As an alternative to the original version with large orchestra and Grand Orgue, Carus-Verlag is now publishing the version for organ made by Saint-Saens's contemporary Leon Roques. It contains the original part for grand orgue as well as an organ arrangement of the orchestral writing in score notation, but also provides for the possibility of a performance with just one instrument. The vocal parts (for soloists and choir) are identical with the edition of the original version, so that the vocal score and chorus score of that version can be used. Score available separately - see item CA.2706000.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Christmas mass, the Messe de Minuit, stands fully in the French tradition of celebrating the happy message of Christ's birth with exuberant cheerfulness. Composed around 1694, this midnight mass incorporates ten old French Christmas carols, giving it both a dance-like swing and special tonal colors. For this edition Andreas Grasle has transcribed the orchestral writing for organ. His distribution of the parts between manuals and pedals allows the distinctive tonal and dynamic gradations of the work to be transferred to the organ in an ideal way. So this version with reduced scoring offers a delightful alternative to the original version. The vocal parts (for soloists and choir) are identical with the edition of the original version, so that the vocal score and chorus score of that version can be used. Also available in the original scoring (Carus 21.029/00).Score available separately - see item CA.2102900.

Franz Schubert's Mass in A-flat major: A work that time and again occupied the composer anew, with which he, in his words, strived towards the highest in art - and perhaps only wished to receive a court appointment in Vienna. His efforts to present a new, individual mass led, at any rate, to unconventional solutions (and an unusual key), a renunciation of plain acclamation, a reduction of pathos in favor of an exceptionally elaborate composition, particularly the first part - a brilliant missa solemnis for the ceremonious organization of the court church service and, at the same time, the public presentation of an ambitious composer's artistic competence. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4065900.

Bach's cantata BWV 13 (from the third cycle of Leipzig cantatas) was first performed on the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany in 1726. This work is marked especially by its scoring, unusual in Bach's church music, in which the strings are joined by two recorders and an oboe da caccia: these wind instruments are used to convey the dominant affections of sighing and pain in the individual arias. In accordance with the intimate character of this cantata the four-part vocal ensemble is used only in the chorale at the end of the work. Score available separately - see item CA.3101300.
