This previously-unpublished Concerto a Quadro presumably started life as a concerto for the standard Baroque forces of flute, strings and continuo, now otherwise unknown; it is preserved in its surviving form for flute, violin, viola and cello in a set of manuscript parts apparently copied by an amateur musician in Sweden. Although unlikely to be the work of Handel, as a rare early example of music for flute quartet it is an attractive extension to a repertoire otherwise dominated by the works of Mozart and his contemporaries. In the present publication, editorial figuring in the cello part allows for the possibility of expanding the texture with additional continuo instruments.

This second volume in the series of his Op. 13 quartets exploits each instrument equally -- even the viola is allocated elaborate solo passages -- and offers an attractive alternative (as Haydn realised at the time) to the standard Viennese works of this period.

Op. 13, the present set of stylish and skilfully contrasted works were dedicated to Dittersdorf; they exploit all four instruments equally, even the viola being allocated elaborate solo passages, and offer an attractive alternative (as Haydn himself realised) to the standard Viennese works of this period.

Like so many of his compatriots, the Czech born Vaclav Pichl spent much of his working life in Vienna (where the Empress Maria Theresa, preferred him to Mozart), but with a period working for Dittersdorf (in what is now Rumania) and nearly twenty years spent in Milan. His compositions were performed at EszterhA!za by Haydn, who had a set of Pichl's new quartets copied in 1780 (he wrote over 30 quartets in all). His compositions were performed at EszterhA!za by Haydn, who had a set of Pichl's new quartets copied in 1780 (he wrote over 30 quartets in all).

String Quartet No.4 was written for the Camilli Quartet who gave the first performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, April 1995. It is dedicated to the memory of Nyman's composition teacher, Alan Bush. This quartet is a narrative made up of a chain of twelve complete but often cross-related movements, each quite simple in design. For instance, the Scottish melody first heard in the second half of I is hinted at in the 2nd violin/viola in the second fast section of II and is directly quoted again during III and XII. The theme of the fast section of IV is taken up again in VIII; IX reverts to the mood of the opening of I, while the rising scale/syncopated themes of II, IX and the bass of X and XII are related. X also reintroduces the slow harmonics theme from VII. XII is (apparently) cast in the form of a baroque French rondeau. The main theme of VI was plucked out of the Quartet and used in my score for Christopher Hampton's film Carrington. Duration 40 minutes. A set of parts is available for sale.

The present set of three string quartets, published in Vienna in 1799 by André, are arranged from two violin sonatas and a piano trio; a certain independence is noticeable in the anonymous arranger, but the result is three strikingly effective new quartets to add to the Mozart oeuvre which will delight all players familiar with the originals and prove a gracious alternative to quartets who look for some escape from the familiar and over exposed repertoire.
