Jef Van Hoof (1886 – 1959) composed his Divertimento for trombone and orchestra in 1935. It was dedicated to his friend, trombonist Jules De Haes, who for many years played in the Antwerp Brass Ensemble, originally founded by Van Hoof. This edition of the Divertimento for trombone and piano reduction was first published by Metropolis Music Publishers in 1952. The work is in two parts, the first of which Moderato molto explores the expressive side of the instrument, while the second part, a Scherzo, is bright, rhythmic, and allows for the soloist to show off a bit.

Jozef (Jef) Schampaert's 1952 Dramatische Fantaisie (Fantaisie Dramatique) for trombone and piano, dedicated to trombone professor Peter Roupcinsky, was written as a concours piece for the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp in Belgium. While the rest of the Belgian school was experimenting with a return to lush romanticism (Alpaerts, Maes, and the musical progeny of Benoit), or beginning to prod the tonal bounds of listenable 12-tone and serialism (Constant and Verbesselt), Schampaert took towards a different sound: that of the Impressionists, transmuted through his distinctly Flemish touch.

MONUMENTS was commissioned by the Resonate project, a collaboration of the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings, Bowling Green State University, the Carr Center, Michigan State University, Oberlin College Conservatory, the University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University. The trombone part was written for David Jackson, professor of trombone at the University of Michigan. The title occurred to me when a friend living in Philadelphia told me she had toured monuments in that city on Memorial Day, 2021. By that time I had already written what I call a “noble, lyrical melody” for trombone to serve as the main theme in the composition.MONUMENTS was finished on September 11, 2021. Other awesome monuments had been created on that date twenty years before.–Adolphus Hailstork.

Max Warnecke's Konzertstuck is characteristic of the nineteenth-century solo Trombone tradition. At six minutes in duration, it is considerably shorter than contemporary solos of the time such as the Grafe Concerto. Like the David Concertino it uses similar martial-style opening and closing themes with a lyrical middle section. The solo and piano accompaniment are of medium difficulty and appropriate for school recitals or professional performances.

Here is a brief description of this very fine new work The Secret of Ben Sogen for Trombone and Piano by the composer, Elizabeth Raum: I've always been fascinated by the Nordic heroes that appear in comic books and video games like Thor or Odin. Years ago, I wrote a concerto for tuba called The Legend of Heimdall inspired by Scandinavian folklore, and for this new work for trombone, I found myself drawn to the Danish mythical character, Ben Sogen. My concept was to conjure up a video game champion who goes through various adventures to achieve his final quest. However, the Secret of Ben Sogen is that he doesn't exist. I made him up. My original title was Bone Quest, a pun on the word, trombone, combined with Quest but that didn't evoke the image I wanted so I decided to create a character from the Danish translation of Bone Quest. Thus Ben Sogen. The Hero Trombonist has a theme stated in the beginning, and this motif continues through a variety of backgrounds (or adventures) before the final major key of his goal being achieved. The work is about 7 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.
