Henry Wolking's The Best Dam Trombone Quintet Ever may just be! It is a fun, feel-good piece to perform and to listen to. The undulating rhythms and close harmonies produce a pleasing mood with a hint of a jazz feel. The music gives you a big hug. Here is a description of the work by the composer: In the summer of 2017 my wife and I moved to the Nevada Dam town of Boulder City. The town began as a construction camp in early 1930s for the workers of the Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam). The dam is one of the worlds great construction projects of the 20th century and has over a million yearly visitors. My house is less than ten minutes away from the dam, and because the dam in one way or another affects everyone living in this unique Nevada town, my newest trombone quintet (composed in January 2018) is the best, well you get the picture. It is a high energy single movement work inspired by the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Ranges are fairly moderate with a high C# in the first trombone at the end. This is a fun romp for five dam fine trombonists. The 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Samuel Scheidt's Galliard Battaglia, composed around 1621 and popularized by the Canadian Brass, has become one of the most recognized works in the brass quintet repertoire. This secular work was originally written for five viols. The Galliard dance style, very popular at the time serves as a perfect foil for the music's echoing back-and-forth fanfares and brilliant scales.

Neal Bennett of iTromboni has done a great job of arranging this music for Trombone quintet of 2 altos (possible on tenor also), 2 tenors & bass, playable by advanced performers. Length is about two minutes.

Nabucco is the opera which established Verdi's reputation as a great composer and even he realized its importance as he noted this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. iTromboni alum Kenneth Pearce and Andrew Poirier have skillfully set the Overture to Nabucco to highlight the beautiful melodies and technical flare in their arrangement for trombone quintet (2 altos, 2 tenors, bass). As in the original, it all begins with a stately trombone chorale, hints at the big melody of Va, pensiero (the great chorus of the Hebrew slaves) and reaches its energetic conclusion full of gusto! Pachelbel's grand Chorale Partita with Seven Variations in G is based on the 17th Century Protestant German hymn tune Alle Menschen mussen sterben (All of Mankind is Mortal) by Jakob Hintze. The original form of the work was in C major with eight variations, composed for Organ. Bach, being greatly influenced by Pachelbel, later took up the melody for use in one of his Cantatas.

Keith Terrett has done a great job arranging these elaborate variations of about 6 minutes in length for a Trombone quintet of advanced performers.

Entrance of the Gladiators is a military march composed in 1897 and soon after was also subtitled Thunder and Blazes. It has become a legendary screamer march for circuses to introduce the clowns.

The march is in three sections with some very lyrical moments followed by the chromatic break section featuring the low brass. The final trio section is also lyrical and chromatic at the same time. When played as a screamer the tempo is often taken to extremes.

Wes Ballenger has done an amazing job of arranging this famous march for a virtuosic Trombone quintet.

The mysterious Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor BWV 867 is special in that its fugue has five voices, has a leap of a minor 9th, and concludes with a hyperstretto (remember the theory class you slept through), the overlapping of ALL five voices offset by only one note. This seven minute work of genius beautifully arranged by Jim Tranquilla of the iTromboni ensemble is appropriate for advanced performers.

Having written over five hundred choral works, Salvation is Created, written in 1914, is perhaps Pavel Chesnokov's most famous. Yet ironically, it was one of his very last sacred works before he was forced to secular composition by the new Soviet government. This beautiful arrangement by James Tranquilla of iTromboni brings together a beautiful communion hymn based on Kievan chant with an added homage to Rimsky-Korsakov's great Russian Easter Overture solo.
