Originally, Camille Saint-Saens created this work for piano in 1877 under the title 'Etude en form de Valse,' Op.52/6. In 1901, Ysaye reworked this piece for violin and piano and published it as 'Caprice d'apres l'Etude en forme de Valse de Saint-Saens.' Ysaye created a veritable masterpiece for violin, far more popular now than the original piano version. It has taken its rightful place in the virtuoso violin literature. This work is on the concert and recorded repertory of virtually every major violinist and a compulsory work at most major competitions.

Claude Debussy (1862-1918) composed Valse Romantique (F minor; CD 79/L.71) in 1890 for solo piano, during a period when he was short piano works in traditional genres, seeking his own style. Unlike the impressionism for which he later became known, this waltz is written in a late romantic style. Not particularly difficult, it is ideal for teaching or for a recital. This transcription for violin or flute and piano was created in 1924 by Alexandre Roelens. Reprint edition.

Wieniawski's specialties as violin virtuoso are represented in both the Capriccio-Valse as well as the Variations on an Original Theme. Sustaining triple and quadruple chords, cantilena in the highest positions, rapid string crossing, playing melody left hand pizzicato while performing bowed accompaniment, rapid on-string and off-string staccato, alternating right hand pizzicato with solid notes and harmonics are all examples of the technical virtuosity displayed.
