The edition of the Andante e Polacca for violin and piano published here was realised from an autograph manuscript held in the library of the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome. An inspired melodic vein, with a cantability typical of Late Romantic Italian compositions, characterises the piece, especially in the first part. The Polacca distinguishes itself for its virtuosity: rapid scales, brilliant bowings and open string passages keep the bowed-string player engaged during the second and longest part of the piece. The recovery of this composition has occurred during a period which gives particular importance to the rediscovery of works composed in Italy around the turn of the twentieth century, rarely performed in concert series, which can only be fully appreciated through their promotion and dissemination in the form of musical editions and recordings. / Niveau : Avancé / Répertoire / Violon et Piano

The first volume of Debussy's Préludes for piano (HN 383) was published in 1910 and was soon followed by arrangements for various scorings commissioned by the original publisher. Debussy personally transcribed only one Prélude, Minstrels, which was released in 1914 in a version for violin and piano. Back at that time, 'Minstrels? was the name given to comedians who performed in blackface and caricatured the alleged behaviour of Blacks in America. The arrangement is of interest not only to pianists, since Debussy intervened in the original musical text by adding variants, but also to violinists, who will discover charming and rewarding music of medium difficulty (5 of 9). / Violon Et Piano

Par SZELENYI ISTVAN. The Hungarian composer István Szelényi (1904-1972) studied with Zoltán Kodály and later himself became a lecturer at the Budapest Academy of Music. This Rhapsody, published here for the first time, was written in 1956 for the Henryk Wieniawski Composition Competition in Warsaw. On the autograph manuscript Szelényi noted in French a saying of his former composition teacher Zoltán Kodály: 'la musique est pour tous' - 'Music is the property of the community – it belongs to everyone'. This Urtext edition contains rewarding discoveries for all lovers of Mozart. Mozart left behind a total of eight unfinished works for piano and violin, predominantly discontinued sonata movements. A considerable number of Mendelssohn?s works are still waiting to be published; many others have been published in an unsatisfactory manner. Though the new Mendelssohn Complete Edition follows the ten volumes of the Leipziger Mendelssohn Ausgabe (LMA) published by the Deutscher Verlag für Musik (DVfM) in Leipzig since 1961, it sees itself as a fundamentally new conception which reflects the present-day standard of scholarly editions. The first volumes of the new Complete Edition were presented in Leipzig on 3 November 1997 at ?Mendelssohn Festtage? in Leipzig.
