The effective use of solo percussion, combined with an elegant orchestration, brought a warm reception at the premiere of this work from Satoshi Yagisawa’s ‘Concertino Series’. Since 2010 Sam is full time drummer in the Royal Band of the Belgian Navy. As a freelance musician he played with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, the National Orchestra of Belgium, Symphonic Factory and many more. In these orchestras some famous conductors crossed his path: f.i. Takuo Yuasa (Jap), Jaap Van Zweden (Ned) and Pincchas Steinberg (Ger). In many performances at the Night of the Proms with Il Novecento, he accompanied world famous artists like Donna Summer, Mike Oldfield, Ike Turner and Macy Gray. As freelance drummer/percussion player he worked on several musical shows as Evita, Elisabeth, Joseph and the amazing tecnicolour dreamcoat, Oliver!, Fiddler on the roof, Cinderella, Wizard of Oz,... Performing all these plays and concerts, he came across the whole wide world. Sam teaches percussion and ensemble at the Conservatory of Mechelen, Belgium. He is founder of the trio Percussive, which is now one the leading percussion groups, touring in the Belgian theatres. Sam made a serie of short percussion videos which were broadcasted many times on national television, and which are still popular on social media. For one of these movies he was granted with 2 awards at the Corporate Video Festival. As a composer Sam wrote many educational pieces, a lot of songs for Percussive, some large compositions for percussion ensemble and 6 musicals/mass productions as King Albert 1, Marie-Antoinette, Gheelamania 2010 & 2015 and Mol-in-scene. These mass productions were visited by more then 90000 people. Sam's piece Frozen planet was the mandatory work voor the ONSK percussion ensemble contest 2016, in the highest level.

Triptykon for Percussion and Orchestra was composed by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen in 1985. Dedicated to Gert Mortensen. Programme note: TRIPTYKON is inspired by the visual arts (a triptych is a painting on three panels, hinged side by side - for instance an altarpiece). The three movements of TRIPTYKON are composed in an eff ort to create clear contrasts of colour. The first movement employs only winds in the orchestra, the second movement only strings, and in the third movement the first two movements are repeated, on top of each other, played simultaneously. Tue percussion solo part has equally distinct colours: for the first movement: metal only, for the second movement: woodonly, and then finally in the third movement- together with the orchestral tutti - skin! Other distinct features in TRIPTYKON are block-like dispositions, polyrhythmic layers and simplicity of tonal colours. Tue often crude articulation of motifs and the frequent use ofrepetition lend a ritual character to the music. TRIPTYKON was composed in close collaboration with percussionist Gert Mortensen and the work is dedicated to him.

Per Norgard BACH TO THE FUTUREFor many years I have been specially fascinated by three of the preludes of Bach's Well-tempered Piano, and I wish with this concerto-version for percussion-duo and orchestra to highlight some of the structural aspects of these pieces: It is my belief that there is a tradition in the music history, that makes it possible to let certain germs in an earlier period unfold into new, but not heterogenious, dimensions of a perhaps several hundred years later phase of the tradition.This concerto is a result of several years collaboration with Uffe Savery and Morten Friis (Safri-Duo), as well in original compositions - (Resonances, Repercussion, Resume in EchoZone I-III) as in arrangements of the 3 Bach preludes, preparing for the enormous stylistic challenges of this work.A few introductory comments to each movement:I Movement: The archetypal sequence of broken chords within C-major has established itself as almost a cultural code, allowing the composer of 1996 to tell his tale-in-tones only by stressing and colouring the tones in the original piece without changing the pitches or (relative) durations as a 'palimpsest' containing as well the old as the new musical tale simultaneously. Later in the movement, this singleline is multiplied by the, till then discrete, but permanently pervading, proportion - throughout the piece - very close to the 'Golden Section'(= 3:5:8.t.i:8 before repetition, 5 before starting anew from the deepest tone, 3 as the rest etc. unchanged). The 3 tonal levels as well as the 3 relative speeds are treated according to these proportions for certain passages, but even in those the main focal point is directed at the freely invented melody (by me) incarnating itself solely by the unpermutad sequels of the original prelude.II Movement: One feature of the F sharp-prelude pervades all the six minutes-long second movement: A 4 times identical rhythmic pattern = 6:4:3:2:3:4:6 - as an hourglass-shaped timeshape - inspired me by the closeness of this pattern to a shape within the infinity-drumming of my invention, called Wide-Fan and Narrow-Fan , referring to pattern consisting of 8:4:2:1:2:4:8, the familiarity with the above - quoted one being obvious. New and old elaborations of this pattern-pair permeates the movement, especially since the Safri-Duo by their performance of my Repercussion had augmented my appetite for including this idiom in a wider context:III Movement: Without the existence of the d-minor-prelude I doubt that I would have dared to write a work like this, since it is the inexhaustible, rare quality and pecularity of this piece, which has stimulated my feeling of wonder and 'modernity' (or: eternity!) of this piece, of which I know of no equal in its special respect: the perpetual ambiguity of melodic foothold in the rhythmic ostinato of a broken descending triad, co.

Kalevi Aho's Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra (2018) is in seven movements performed without a break and each using the guitar in a different way. The fairly slow introduction-like movement is followed by a virtuosic Allegro molto in which the guitar is also used like a percussion instrument in places as the soloist taps out rhythms on the soundboard. Motifs from the Introduzione reappear in the Interludio, and in the lyrical, singing Andante cantabile that follows. In the Misterioso movement the guitarist plays only flageolet notes. The sixth movement, Presto, is the other virtuoso one in the concerto. The Presto is the concerto's dynamic climax. From then onwards, the music subsides to a slow Epilogue, gradually retreating into silence. Duration: c. 30 minutes.
