In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. Joseph Addison is not particularly well known; he was English, a classical scholar, essayist, poet and politician, but one of his hymns was used by Benjamin Britten. in his setting of a Thomas Tallis canon. The hymn is singularly beautiful and being a composer always inspired by extramusical stimuli such as poems, nature, paintings, I was immediately convinced when I carne across the Addison hymn, that here was exactly what I wanted to use as my major source of inspiration for this piece, commissioned by and written for The Berlin Philharmonic. I don't refer to the hymn in its entirety, but have chosen the following 3 excerpts, all acting as mottos for the first three sections of the piece, thus turning the piece into a straightforward tonepoem in the classical.

It only became apparent a few years ago that the text of the soprano cantata Falsche Welt, dir trau ich nicht came from the collection Gott-geheiligten Sabbaths-Zehnden by the Leipzig theology student and Bach pupil Christoph Birkmann, printed in 1728 in Nuremberg. Birkmann was probably therefore the author of the text. The cantata was written for the 23rd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 24 November 1726 in the year of its first performance. As in other cantatas in the first annual cycle, Bach chose an instrumental sinfonia as the opening movement - here the first movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto. The soprano soloist has two recitatives and two arias, in which the falsehood of the world is juxtaposed with trust in God. The cantata text is rounded off with the first verse of the chorale In dich hab ich gehoffet, scored for four-part chorus, as is usual with Bach. With the use of two horns and three oboes added to the string ensemble, the cantata has colorful and varied orchestration. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3105200.

The break Bach's works in connection with the reperformance of the St. Matthew Passion led to a series of cantatas based on well-known chorale melodies for choir, instruments, and sometimes also for soloists. Bach's cantata BWV 132 was written for the 4th Sunday in Advent, and the autograph score is dated 1715. It was composed while Bach was at Weimar, to a libretto by the Weimar Court Preacher Salomon Franck. Its subject matter is the testimony of John the Baptist addressed to the Christian community and to individual believers. Since the original concluding chorale, the fifth verse of the hymn Herr Christ der einig Gotts Sohn (Elisabeth Cruziger), has been lost, here the cantata ends with the last movement (transposed from B flat to A major), to the same words, of the cantata BWV 164. As in all cantatas for St. Michael the chorale cantata Lord God, we praise thee all of us BWV 130 from 1724 is a magnificent composition. Not only in the opening chorus and the final chorale do the three trumpets and timpani play a role, but the first aria In hell the serpent, hot with hate is even accompanied solely by trumpets, timpani and continuo. The second aria, Thou, of cherubim the master, brings an unexpected contrast in which, besides the tenor and continuo, on a solo flute is heard. The original set of parts were separated from each other in the 19th century and today are scattered throughout the world. For the first time, some of the parts were taken into consideration in preparing this edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3113000.

Bach's cantata BWV 26 belongs to the Leipzig cycle of chorale cantatas, 1724/25, and it was first performed on 19 November 1724. The underlying 13-vers hymn by Michael Franck provided Bach and his unidentified librettist with an abundance of metaphors and comparisons which, from verse to verse and movement to movement, illustrate the fleeting and transitory nature of earthly life: an impressive musical-poetic exposition of potent baroque pictures of vanity.. With its scoring for a large number of performers, who according to earlier practice were divided into various groups, this Cantata is clearly a festive work. In the richness of its scoring it was equalled, but not surpassed, by Bach's first Leipzig Cantate for the Election of the Town Council, BWV 119, of 1723. It is noticeable that the words of BWV 63 relate to Christmas only in the recitatives, while the choruses and arias express the praise of God in general terms.
