Craig McLeish began his musical life as a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral under Barry Rose. He began composing at the age of ten and his preces and responses for four trebles are still in the repertoire. After a degree at York University he returned to London to study at the Guildhall and sang again at St Paul's as a tenor. At the time he also arranged and copied music for West End shows such as Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, and played bass guitar for various groups. This led to a spell in the cult pop band 'Fat and Frantic', who shaved the top 100 twice with the whimsical anthem Last night my wife hoovered my head. He also worked as musical assistant for David Heneker (Half a Sixpence) and David Fanshawe (African Sanctus). In 1992 Craig became director of the Methodist Association of Youth Clubs Orchestra and Singers, performing concerts throughout the UK and becoming involved in a number of recordings and BBC broadcasts. During this time he arranged more than 250 orchestral scores ranging from Queen to Calamity Jane, Stravinsky and Stevie Wonder. Alongside this he began arranging and writing songs for children's collections (Big Blue Planet, Love Shone Down) and producing recordings and string arrangements for various artists (Sheila Walsh, Kim Hill, Matt Redman). He is also well known as a conductor and arranger for Songs of Praise. Recently Craig has collaborated with composer Tolga Kashif writing orchestrations for the RPO's Seo Taiji Symphony, the Classic FM chart-topping CD by saxophonist Tyler Rix, and the Genesis Suite which was premiered at the Barbican. He has been musical director of Young Voices UK for 13 years, bringing large school choirs together to play with a live band and solo artists, and currently conducts the Milton Keynes Community Choir, Hart and Soul Community Choir and the Milton Keynes Youth Choir. / Choeur SSA

Edition de Gerald Hoekstra In 1597 the Antwerp printer Pierre Phal? issued what was to be his last new anthology of chansons, Le Rossignol musical des chansons for the enjoyment of those who delight in singing in the French tongue. Like his great madrigal anthologies of the 1580s, this collection for four, five, and six voices exhibits a wide variety of secular song styles of the time. Texts range from the conservative and somewhat moralistic to the risqu?nd playful, and musical styles from the homophonic, rhythmic manner associated with the Parisian chanson to the more polyphonic and expressive style of the Italian madrigal. Composers include local Antwerp musicians such as Pevernage and Cornet, Netherlanders working abroad such as Rogier and Monte, and Frenchmen such as Le Jeune and Caignet. Ubi caritas et amor is a simple, reflective anthem for mixed-voice choir and organ. Brian Easdale was educated at Westminster Abbey Choir School and attended the Royal College of Music, where he won the Foli Scholarship for composition. He wrote his first opera, Rapunzel , when only 17, and went on to composer many other dramatic and orchestral works, including the chamber opera The Sleeping Children. The Missa Coventriensis is one of his larger choral works, composed for the consecration of Coventry Cathedral in 1962. Easdale is perhaps most famous for his film music, including Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes, for which he won an Academy Award for best original music score in 1948. 'Ubi Caritas is the work of a craftsman steeped, naturally, in the musical culture of the inter-war years. It commends itself in its quiet yet muscular and expansive response to the text. Ballad On Danish Folk Legends. Par GADE NIELS WILHELM. With 'Elverskud” ('The Erl-Kings Daughter”), Gade presented his second 'secular cantata for soloists, choir and orchestra”, the first having been his successful 'Comala” Op. 12 (1845/46). The genre was quite popular among his contemporaries. This time, Gade planned to base the work on the text of a folk song. Originally, he had approached Hans Christian Andersen for a text but a collaboration did not materialize. The text Gade ultimately chose for his music was that of a ballad most likely penned by Emil Erslev and Gade himself. A German translation by Edmund Lobedanz was added at a later time. The composition, started in 1851 and finished in March of 1854, soon became an international success and one of Gade's most-performed works. In 1864, the composer made a number of changes to the instrumentation. While the new version was subsequently used for all performances conducted by Gade, the changes were never incorporated into the printed edition of the score.
