With his clarinet quintet, begun in 1915, Reger was remembering his role models Mozart and Brahms, whose works in this genre he particularly admired. This melancholic quintet that is worked through in a strictly motivic way was to be Reger's last opus. Shortly after he had sent it to his publisher, he died of heart attack in May 1916. The quintet was to become his swan song, first performed at a memorial for the composer on 6 November 1916. Almost one hundred years later, we are now publishing it for the first time in an Urtext edition, edited by the Reger scholar Michael Kube. / Quintette De Clarinettes

Le morceau a été enregistré par les BBC Singers dans Cripplegate de St Giles, London le jeudi 17 Novembre 2011. Il a été diffusé sur les chants de la BBC Radio 3 pour le petit déjeuner le lundi 19 Décembre 2011.L'ouvrage s'ouvre sur un solo de soprano qui nous rappelle un solitaire aigus effectuer le premier couplet d'un chant de la congrégation, avec le choeur traditionnel offrant harmonie à quatre parties dans le deuxième couplet. Le troisième verset associe un élément de XVIe / XVIIe siècle fauxbourdon - la mélodie est chantée par le ténor - avec un effet décoratif, sans paroles descant fourni à la fois par la soprano et alto. Le dernier verset s'ouvre avec les sopranos proclamant 'Un enfant nous est né!'
