One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Philip Sparke’s sumptuous arrangement of this Stephen Foster classic will make a perfect item to bring a few minutes of peace and calm tranquillity to any concert. The lush harmonies, so characteristic of Philip Sparke’s arranging. Once you have played this once you will want it on every concert programme.

A Midwest Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and premiered by them during their appearance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago on 20th December 2017 where this fanfare was the opening piece of the entire event. This piece is designed to be played with the cornets split into two teams either side of the band. It opens with the two groups answering each other antiphonally over a repeated figure in the lower band. A calmer central section introduces a euphonium solo which is then taken up by the whole ensemble. This leads back to a repeat of the opening fanfares over a rhythmic accompaniment and a short coda which brings the work to a close.

Anyone who believes traditional tonality to be no longer capable of expressing anything more than timeworn cliches should listen to Kerem's work. (Robert Maxham / Fanfare) Lament for violoncello and strings was written as a commission from Camerata Nordica and its principal cello, Per Nystrom, in 2008. At Per's request the solo part in this piece was composed to represent a lone human voice in a world of disappointment. The composer tells: I used the violins and violas as an operatic choir: they support and comment on the lament of the lone human being. The bass line is one long drone throughout the piece, representing destiny or unwanted reality. It disappears only when the solo voice with the chorus of violins and violas intensifies in their disagreement with life. At the climax of the piece the solo voice is momentarily swallowed by the chorus, only to return with an angry statement of the opening phrase. Thereafter the chorus calms down in acceptance that the world won't change. The bass drone returns to haunt the dying lament of the lone voice. The very last phrase is the only one in a major key and echoes as a prayer for hope. Duration c. 9 minutes. Score (all three versions), separate solo parts for violoncello / viola / violin and orchestral parts (33221).

This short, evocative piece was written for a clarinet quartet, optionally accompanied by a vibraphone. It can be seen as a kind of song without words and aims to express the longing for warmer seasons. The short days of winter carry a certain melancholy, but at the same time, an unparalleled calm. This interplay between tranquility and longing is intended to be expressed through the harmonies in the piece. The composition is written in the harmonic context of D minor at many points, although not a single D minor chord appears throughout the entire piece. This harmonic openness remains unresolved until the end, leaving the listener with a sense of uncertainty.

Ariel is scored for basset clarinet, violin, cello and piano, and is a response to the poem of the same name by Sylvia Plath. Simpson reacted to the poem musically, jotting down the ideas for instrumental combinations, as well as the emotional content as he read the words. The piece begins, ('Stasis in darkness...') and gradually wakens up to a furious outburst in all the instruments. Scales descend to the depths of the instruments ranges, out of which a slow, winding duet for basset clarinet and cello leads to the centre of the work – a slow, calm three-chord chorale. The work then comes to a stand-still where short outbursts are gradually transformed into new, faster material. The three-chord chorale motif then goes through a number of permutations until a recap of theopening's outburst is quickly side-lined by a boldly expressive return of the chorale motif. This piece is about extremes – extremesof expression, of instrumental textures and capabilities.

“Sonatina by Eugène Bozza is a piece for Four unequal Clarinets (an E flat Clarinet, two B flat and a Bb Bass Clarinet). Strongly lyrical, this piece, which lasts approximatively 7'50 minutes, is very interesting and quite challenging to play. It explores the full high and low of the instruments, and requires some good ability of breathing and strong agility. It is divided into three main parts, which are: I. Allegro vivo, II. Calme (Quiet) and III. Allegro Vivo. While the first and third sections are very cheerful and energetic, the second part is slower and more reflective. Eugène Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas, chamber works and ballets among others.&rdquo.

The first piece “Sicut ros Hermon†(Psalm 133) meditates on the path God’s mercy takes, whereby the initial slow descending harmonic sequences develop into an emphatic song followed by a tender chorale-like coda. “Si sumpsero pennas aurorae†(Psalm 139) relates to a highly poetic, consolatory but also admonishing image of the psalm: As far as our wings may carry us, God’s hand will take hold of us. We cannot escape his mercy or his judgement. At the end of this striking movement the music conveys almost haptic moments; one can sense the mighty ‘hand’ by means of the tutti sound. Finally the music becomes as calm as at the start of this piece, though dialogue-like figurations convey repercussions of what was experienced and acknowledged.

At the request of the dynamic Eufonix Quartet (Danny Helseth, Aaron Tindall, Kelly Thomas, Pat Stuckemeyer), I composed Homage for premiere at the 2015 Northeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, held at Ithaca College in New York. Compositionally, my intention was to capitalize on the uncanny capacity of the four musicians of Eufonix to match tone color and nuance, always the mark of a gifted ensemble. Homage unfolds as a simple memory of respect, admiration, affection and thanks. Set in a timeless ebb and flow of gently swelling harmonies, an introspective calm emerges as performers and listeners meet in a welcome space of repose. The experience is one of shared ritual, imbued with hope and quiet optimism. Originally scored for quartet of two euphoniums and two tubas, Homage is effective for any combination of low brass instruments. The music takes on exceptional depth and meaning when presented by a large ensemble.

Commissioned by the Nevine String Quartet, an ensemble of players from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Ritchie's second string quartet is an impressive synthesis of sophistication and emotion. The first movement is dominated by energetic compound meters and rhythms, with motivic ideas derived from a magic square, while the second movement's quiet rocking motion is pervaded by minor thirds, a common interval in children's songs. The third movement is a vigorous ternary form, with melodic lines that are angular and restless. Its middle section, by contrast, is simple and calm in mood, with a folk-like waltz in the first violin. The allegro molto finale features a rustic theme on viola and concludes with motifs from the other movements invading the texture, bringing the work to a frenetic close.

Otto M. Schwarz was asked by a friend to compose a chorale for the funeral of his child. Lux Aeterna (The Eternal Light) is actuallypart of the requiem mass, but in this composition, there is no reference to the original Latin text. People who recount near-death experiences often report a bright light. The music moves back and forth between passages that are sad, optimistic, and imploring in nature, posing questions that cannot be answered. The end of the piece comes, however, with a conciliatory major chord that reflectsthe calm and warmth of this light that promises redemption.

1870: a calm year for Wagner
ISBN 9783765104220. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. German.
Wagner spent the year 1870 almost exclusively in the idyllically situated country house of Tribschen near Lucerne. He dedicated himself to artistic creation (Siegfried, Gotterdammerung). In March Wagner began seriously thinking about settling in Bayreuth in order to realize his festival idea. In July Hans and Cosima von Bulow were divorced, and Wagner was able to wed his life companion in Lucerne on 25 August. His reclusive life did not prevent him from taking active part in the events around him. To begin with, there were performances of his works, in particular the world premiere of Walkure in Munich. The main topic of the second half of the year was the Franco-Prussian War, which was heartily applauded by Wagner. The volume contains 273 letters, 50 of which are printed here for the first time, and 23 others published in their entirety for the first time.

Dedicated to the luminary Steve Cowan, …empty mind, open heart… is a four-movement suite that centers around the intervals of a fifth and a tritone. Each movement is inspired by a quote from the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. The opening movement is a meditation. The aleatoric rhythms and pacing of the notes are guided by the breathing of the performer, according to specific instructions in the score. Out of that atmosphere emerges a fluid, serene series of arpeggios in irregular rhythms in the second movement. Each new chord changes only one or two notes at a time in a gradual evolution over time. The third movement is a study in rhythm, sometimes dizzying.

In Letter from Home, Philip Sparke has aimed aim to capture the emotions that can be experienced when away from home; a letter or phone call can bring both happy and sad emotions and music is perhaps unique in being able to express these subtle and paradoxical feelings. The calm opening leads to a reflective melody on clarinets and saxophones; but it is not long before the peaceful mood turns to turmoil, which eventually brings feelings of resignation in a calm chorale with a more positive mood.
