Performance Material on Hire[Solo: Bs - Picc.2.2.2.2 - 2.2.2.0 - Str]In the second half of the 19th century, in Italy, melodrama was still the most practised musical genre, but space for instrumental production began to grow, especially thanks to the Quartet societies which tried to reduce the gap remaining compared to other European countries, offering it to the public with an energy which was certainly praiseworthy. However, they were not the only institutions where instrumental music was cultivated. In this context it must be remembered that music conservatories also played an important role, especially through the music recitals given by the best students. In one of these, which was held at the Milan Conservatory on 9 July 1884, the concert piece Andante e Polacca for bassoon and orchestra by Simplicio Gualco (1861-1942) was performed, a piece which aroused a great deal of interest as stated in the ‘Gazzetta Musicale di Milano’ of 20 July of that year. After the recital, the piece ended up in the Conservatory archives and was never played again. It was rediscovered recently, thanks to the research work on the composer by the musicologists Italo Vescovo and Flavio Menardi Noguera, both connected to the composer’s hometown.

His rich oeuvre did by no means limit itself to music for the stage but included works for almost all the vocal and instrumental genres. With the present trio sonata, the distinguished contrapuntalist demonstrates his art in the realm of chamber music. In accordance with the generous instrumentation practice of the time, the violin may be replaced by an oboe and the viola da gamba by a viola. Craig Seller Lang (1891-1971) was a British composer, organist and musical pedagogue, who was born in New Zealand. He studied at the Royal College of Music before becoming a teacher at Christ's Hospital School. His compositions were mostly written with a student performer in mind. He is best remembered for his seminal educational Organ books, but he also created prolific volumes of material in both sacred and secular choral genres.

Gordon Jacob (1895-1984) was a British composer and arranger, and one of the last proponents of the great Edwardian musical tradition. He studied at the Royal College of Music under Stanford, Parry, Vaughan Williams and Howells, and later taught there for over forty years. He was a prolific composer, creating over seven hundred works, but he was particularly celebrated for his books on music pedagogy. He is probably best remembered for Music for aFestival, written for the Festival of Britain, and his arrangement of the National Anthem for the Coronation in 1953.

Audi Filia was written for the celebrations for St Cecilia's Day in Rome in October 1720. It was originally part of a much larger mass setting for the event, which is considered to be one of the finest pieces of music to survive from the Baroque era. Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer, music teacher, and conductor. Stanford composed a substantial number of concert works, including seven symphonies, but his best-remembered pieces are his choral works for church performance, chiefly composed in the Anglican tradition. Admitted to Queens College, Cambridge with an Organ scholarship Stanford had written a substantial number of compositions, including vocal music, both sacred and secular, and orchestral works before getting involved with the university's Musical Society. While still an undergraduate, Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College, Cambridge.
Part of the'Four Intermezzi Op. 189' Intermezzo On An Irish Air for Organ is based on the melody of the well-known 'Londonderry Air'. The traditional Irish tune was first collected in the mid 19th century by Jane Ross, and is recognised all around the world by the Irish Diaspora. Duration ca. 6:20.
