The usual version with bagpipes is the best known and there is a similarity in Swingin’ Kilts owing to its long, drone-like tones in the accompaniment. The theme has been rhythmically adapted but it is still easily recognisable. Swingin’ Kilts holds a challenge for every brass band. He wrote over 100 works, but the only one which has endured to the present day is the 1926 opera Schwanda The Bagpiper, which has been preformed in 17 different languages, and was performed thousands of times between the wars. The Polka is one of the two orchestral excerpts from Schwanda The Bagpiper which are still regularly performed. It has been arranged here for Piano duet by Joan Trimble.
