The Magnificat was commissioned in 2017 by the Landesakademie fur die musizierende Jugend in Baden-Wurttemberg for the Choir of the International Choir Festival C.H.O.I.R. In this setting of the hymn of praise from St Luke's gospel, we hear the solo soprano as the voice of Mary. The work draws on the wealth of Afro-Caribbean rhythms. The first movement gives a hymn-like expression to the message of the text with the tremendous energy of the Cuban salsa. There are many examples of the relationship between word and music throughout the work. An example of this is the passage Deposuit potentes (He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble and meek). In this passage, a 9-part canon vividly portrays the words et exaltavit and deposuit through chromatic passagework in contrary motion extending over an octave. With this work composer Bobbi Fischer has created a musical bridge between Europe and South America as well as stylistic links to his Missa latina (Carus 28.007). The rhythm group (piano, bass, drums, and percussion) is identical; new instrumental colors from the Latin world are added with two obbligato violins and one reedplayer (alto saxophone/flute) - in the place of the bandoneon and violin used in the Missa latina. The Magnificat is also available on CD (Carus 83.483).

Maria durch ein? Dornwald ging (Blest Mary Wanders Through the Thorn) is a traditional German Christmas song. The earliest known version is recorded in the Andernacher Gesangbuch from 1608. Halfway through the nineteenth century it was a regional pilgrimage song in Thüringen, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the current version was registered in the songbook Zupfgeigenhansl of the German youth movement. Michael Bilkes used the well-known melody to create this attractive arrangement for concert band.

Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging (Maria door een doornwoud trad) is een traditioneel Duits kerstlied. De oudst bekende versie is opgetekend in het Andernacher Gesangbuch uit 1608. Halverwege de negentiende eeuw was heteen regionaal bedevaartslied in Thüringen en aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw werd het in de huidige versie opgenomen in het liedboek Zupfgeigenhansl van de Duitse jeugdbeweging. Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging heeftal vele arrangeurs ge nspireerd tot het schrijven van koorbewerkingen. Michael Bilkes verwerkte de bekende melodie in een sfeervol arrangement voor harmonieorkest.

Folk hero Billy Miner (the Grey Fox) was the last of the old-time bandits. He was noted for his unusual politeness and is believed to be the originator of the phrase, Hands up! This composition is like a mini movie score and starts with the Billy Miner ragtime theme, followed by a train robbery, his capture, and final release. Afro-Cuban composer Joseph (José) White Lafitte studied violin and composition at the Paris Conservatory between 1855 and 1871, winning the 1856 First Grand Prize. He eventually became a French citizen in 1870, leaving Paris only for a period of time between 1877 to 1889 when he was director of the Imperial Conservatory in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. White composed mainly for his own instrument, which happened to be the famous 1737 Swansong Stradivari violin.  In addition to numerous etudes and a virtuosic violin concerto, White wrote this habanera for two violins, La Bella Cubana. In this string orchestra arrangement, the lyrical melodic solos are spread throughout the orchestra. Traditional Cuban dance rhythms in the contrasting middle theme capture the vibrant joy of the original work.

Jacob de Haan arranged four Christmas carols in the suite Four Shepherd Songs. In the four-part instrumentation, creating the possibility to play the piece with a large number of varied strengths, he successively arranged Als ich bei meinen Schafen wacht, Inmitten der Nacht, Kommet ihr Hirten, and Ihr Hirten, erwacht. The arrangement was skillfully replenished with suitable percussion instruments. All of the carols can be performed with a choir (German text). Four Shepherd Songs beautifully enriches the Christmas repertoire.

Jacob de Haan bewerkte vier kerstliederen in de suite Four Shepherd Songs. In een vierstemmige instrumentatie, die de mogelijkheid biedt om het werk met een groot scala aan gevarieerde bezettingen te spelen, bewerkte hij achtereenvolgens:Als ich bei meinen Schafen wacht, Inmitten der Nacht, Kommet ihr Hirten en Ihr Hirten, erwacht. De vierstemmige instrumentatie werd vakkundig aangvuld met gepast slagwerk. Daarnaast kunnen alle liederenmet koor (Duitse tekst) uitgevoerd worden. De Four Shepherd Songs vormen hierdoor een verrijking van het kerstrepertoire.

Jacob de Haan hat vier Weihnachtslieder bearbeitet und zu der Suite Four Shepherd Songs (Vier Hirtenlieder) zusammengefügt. Die vierstimmige Bearbeitung, die eine Aufführung mit vielen und unterschiedlich großen Besetzungen erlaubt, wurde mit Schlagzeug effektvoll angereichert. Alle vier Lieder können zudem mit einem Chor (deutscher Text) aufgeführt werden uns sind somit eine echte Bereicherung des weihnachtlichen Repertoires.

L’harmonisation quatre voix avec percussion offre un vaste choix de combinaisons instrumentales. Pour réaliser cet arrangement brillant, Jacob de Haan a rassemblé les chants Als ich bei meinen Schafen wacht, Inmitten der Nacht, Kommet Ihr Hirten et Ihr Hirten, erwacht. Tempo is half note around 77 BPM, with solo opportunities, tenor 1 and trumpet 2 with suggested written solo provided. Lead trumpet range goes to written A-flat, a great sax soli along with optional flute and vibe parts. Up Jumped Spring arranged by Jeff Jarvis is an excellent choice! (5:41).
