| La Muette Jobert
Make the silence talk'La Muette knew how to make the silence talk like no one', ...(+)
Make the silence talk'La Muette knew how to make the silence talk like no one', writes Djavann in his book (La Muette, © Flammarion 2008). Those words deeply touched me for they express one of the most beautiful metaphors in music. Through the lines of discourse, beyond words, I was listening to the silence of 'La Muette'. A rare and intense listening which joins the same internal listening I use when I'm writing my score. I was listening to La Muette, I decided to write a new piece to make the silent voice of La Muette told by Chahdortt Djavann sound through music. Choosing the extracts The text put in music is composed of short extracts from Djavann's story. I focused on this woman's portrait, who conquers her freedom through silence in which she forms a strong love relationship with her niece Fatemeh on the one hand, and the Uncle on the other hand. 'She had made her silence become her art of living, her freedom' writes Djavann. The extremely dramatic tension, the flow of the singing in Persian language, and the oppression in relation to the Iranian context are trying to underline the independent beauty of that woman who resists and exists without a voice. Story A young 15 years old Iranian girl named Fatemeh is in jail. Waiting for her death sentence, she writes the story of her aunt on a small notebook, 'so that someone remembers La Muette and myself'. The young teenager was raised by her aunt who becomes mute because she decided to stop talking on a dark day of her own childhood when she was interrogated, never to tell THE truth. An aunt whose silence makes even more fascinating, haughty, with an insolent look, cigarette at her lips, bare-footed and without any scarf on her head. 'La Muette' had made her silence become her art of living, her freedom. Around her, women start to talk, even considering her mad, for only a mad person could act this way. Fatemeh loves her mute aunt unconditionally, that is how she wants to become a woman, by being like her, fascinated by her silence and her excesses. La Muette embodies a figure of Freedom and makes us remember that in some countries, the woman who won't be submissive risks capital punishment. She will be hung. Following this beautiful text by Chahdortt Djavann, 'La Muette', a powerful text, stiff, tensed, without any lyricism nor compromises, which takes place in Iran under the Mollahs' regime. Persian: Phonological material / Compositional material Djavann's story is written in French. I asked Baharé Khadjé-Nouri to translate the text into Persian, and worked with her on pronunciation, accentuation, metric and the structure of the language, and I thank her again for that. I spent a long time having some people reading me the text in Persian and through listening I immersed myself in that sound universe. From this linguistic material, the beginning of the piece starts with the constitution of a tank of sound objects which will constitute parts of the compositional material. To compose the phonological tank, I worked on writing the pronunciation that lies at the origin of every possible vocal composition, writing the tone as well as the 'percussive - resounding' aspects of phonemes, multiple uses of fricative consonants or sibilants. Finally I used the vocal treatment of the phoneme through modes of play in relation to sprechsang: sing -inspire, or -expire, -blow, -chanting, -whispering, -spitting, -speaking. But a purely phonetic analysis of the vocal structures composing the sung part would reduce the word to its mere phonetic entity. The phonological material then constituted a compositional material by giving to the sung word its semantic entity. Form of the piece To strip the drama off every narrative element, at least of the discursive and linear character of the story, I first re-organized parts of the text extracted from the whole book in an order fitting the form I wanted to give to the piece (except for the beginning and ending which are kept in their linear forms). I imagined Fatemeh in jail, whose memories bounced between the four walls of her cell: recurring musical material, re-injected in an obsessive way, disjointed and contrasted, continuously modified each time, bouncing from one sequence to the next in another state. The piece is divided into 5 sequences, between each of them is an instrumental interlude with a voice-off, the voice of the present in the cell that contrasts with the singing voice of the sequence, evocation of memories of La Muette (sequence 1: preamble, sequence 2: portrait of La Muette, sequence 3: La Muette and Fatemeh, sequence 4: La Muette and the Uncle, sequence 5: epilogue). Electroacoustic setupFor this piece, I wrote the electroacoustic parts myself at the same time I was writing the instrumental parts. The electroacoustic setup is here considered as a whole instrument, an instrument added to the 12 others electroacoustic instruments and to Donatienne's voice. The electroacoustic sounds are divided into three types: - Samples from the singer's voice and instruments of the TM+ ensemble transformed - The narrator's voice Baharé Khadjé-Nouri in Persian, original version or transformed - Extra-musical sounds As for the synchronization between the acoustic and the electroacoustic scores, we will use for the first time an innovative application developed by Frédéric Bevilacqua and Bruno Zamborlin, not to follow the moves as we did it in StreicherKreis (my string quartet created in November 2008), but to follow the voice and orchestra. Thus, we will be using an 'audio-following', which constituted a first. This setup of recognition and following will allow the synchronization between instrumental and electroacoustic scores in a musical and precise way. Concerning the interactivity between performers and device, it will all be in real-time. Characteristics of the musicians' sound will 'interpret' what comes out of the speakers. The musicians will define the settings of the sound transformations, in terms of space, transposition, tone or length. This new piece expresses a message through the choice of subject that goes beyond strictly music. For me, it is important that both the composer and writer can invest their work into problematics which they're confronted to because they are immediate witnesses. / Soprano Et Percussions

Instrumentation: piano Edition: score Publisher: Eberhard Mayer OEuvres pour piano/Klaviermusik/Piano Music Edition en 10 recueils/Edition in 10 Bänden/Edition in 10 volumes Volume 1: Femmes de Légende Editor: Eberhard Mayer Item no.: fue 4180 Difficulty: medium ISMN: 979-0-50012-918-9 Contents: Mélisande, Desdémona, Ophelie, Viviane, Phœbé, Omphale und Salomé The pieces for piano represent a great stylistic variety. One gets the impression that Mel Bonis may have intended to give a summary of musical development, not quoting historic styles but adapting the past through her personal tone and to translate it into contemporary musical language. The first volume includes an original series of musical portraits dedicated to legendary women, where Mel Bonis explores the enigmatic feminine universe. „Femmes de légende“ A collection we have called “Femmes de légende” contains seven piano pieces by Mel Bonis named after women whose fates have become legendary. They have not always been arranged in this way. The first piece, “Mélisande”, was published separately by Alphonse Leduc in 1898. In 1909, a collection called “Trois pièces pour piano” (Three pieces for the piano), dedicated to the composer Paul Locard and which included “Phœbé”, “Viviane” and “Salomé”, was published by Leduc. In 1913, “Mélisande” was added to the four last pieces for a final collection called “Cinq pièces”. “Omphale” appeared in a Berlin edition “Signale für die musikalische Welt” in 1910. As to “Ophélie”, it was never published in Mel Bonis’ lifetime and we discovered a manu-script in 1997 without any indication at all of when it was writ-ten. “Ophélie” was first published by the publishing house Ar-miane in Versailles in 1998. Mélisande (1898) Written before Debussy’s famous opera, Mel Bonis’ piano piece “Mélisande” was also inspired by the poet Maeterlinck (Mélisande, 1893). These short pages of magical harmonies, of radi-ant impressionist colours use music to describe Mélisande’s hair as described by Pelleas: “your hair and its beautiful light... It escapes everywhere, it shivers, it shakes, it trembles in my hand like a golden bird.” This piece enjoyed quite a success in Mel Bonis’ lifetime. She noted of it “my favourite” in the margin of her hand-written catalogue. Desdémona (1913) The female heroine in Shakespeare’s “Othello” inspired Mel Bonis to write a nostalgic piece with a fairly easy, rather classical beginning, a kind of romance without words, of great elegance and of a deep and melancholic beauty. Ophélie Ophelia, the lover of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is a deeply melan-cholic character who goes mad and drowns in mysterious cir-cumstances. Ophelia inspired the poet Rimbaud and the painter Millais – each of them created a masterpiece. Mel Bonis too evokes images of water, sadness and death in music for a third work of art. With its delicate and chilling beauty and also with its moments of passion, this impressionist piece - the work which owes most to Debussy - calls for great intelligence when performed. Viviane (1909) The figure of the fairy of the lake is musically described here in a well-structured, many-facetted piece; first of all, the initial dancing theme has an air of the “salon” about it, typical of its time, evoking the fairy’s charm, her smile. Then follow succes-sions of majestic chords and fluent harmonies which represent the underwater castle and the fairy’s power. This piece is easily approachable. Phœbé (1909) The sister of Phoebus, the sun, symbolises the moon, the night, chastity. The piece creates an impression of night. Steeped in twilight, languor and a sense of immense space, the atmosphere is one of unreality. This feeling of alienation is reinforced by the incoherence of rhythm between the two hands. Salomé (1909) Inspired by the Orient, Mel Bonis creates a very original musical illustration of the biblical character of Salome. She is characterised by shifting moods in which slow syncopes follow light glissandos, and urgent, mysterious psalmodies accompany sensual melopeias, where surprising tempo varia-tions lead to outbreaks of violence. With its relatively difficult beginning, this piece is especially interesting from the viewpoint of research into interpretation. Omphale (1910) The queen of Lydia is a female character from the violent depths of Greek mythology. This powerful female is described here with glittering sensuality and Oriental subtlety. The impressive work shows a complex structure both in harmony and rhythm, it is a lively and rich work which calls for much thought and great virtuosity on the performer’s part. “Omphale” was awarded a prize for composition by the Berlin magazine “Signale für die musikalische Welt” in 1910.

(BARTOK BELA) Piano solo [Sheet music] EMB (Editio Musica Budapest)
Par BARTOK BELA. Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Children ...(+)
Par BARTOK BELA. Bartók composed his first pedagogical collection For Children between 1908 and 1911. The first edition was issued between 1909 and 1911 in four volumes, comprising two of Hungarian and two of Slovak folk song arrangements. After moving to America, Bartók considered it important to produce new editions of his earlier works. Thus in autumn 1943, together with his new publisher Boosey & Hawkes, he planned a new edition of For Children, and to this end completely revised the collection. Although Bartók had already completed his revision by the end of 1943, the revised edition was only issued in 1946. The pieces were published without titles in the first edition, but the folksong lyrics were included. These lyrics, deemed unnecessary for the non-Hungarian audiences, were not taken over to the American revised edition however, a significant number of pieces were provided with a title conveying their mood and their background in folk music and folk life. The American edition omitted the folk songs lyrics that seemed unnecessary to the audience there, but the titles of the first edition were replaced with English titles (some with the same meaning and some with modified interpretations) conveying each song's mood and background in folk music and folk life. The present edition - which contains the same scores as those in Volume 37 of the Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition (Z. 15037) - is based on the revised version that the composer made in 1943 for the new edition, to which he also referred to as ''corrected''. We have added Hungarian translations to the English titles but we have also restored the original collection of folk song texts with parallel English translations. The pieces discarded from the revised version, as well as early versions that are significantly different from the revised version, are included in the Appendix. This publication contains a preface and editorial comments in both Hungarian and English./ Recueil / Piano

Baroque allemand poésie me fascine depuis longtemps.

| Clarinet Method Op. 63
Band 1 : #1 - 33 Clarinet [Sheet music + CD] Schott
The clarinet method op. 63 by Carl Baermann from 1867 is still a standard work i...(+)
The clarinet method op. 63 by Carl Baermann from 1867 is still a standard work in classical clarinet education today. The thoroughly revised new edition aims at reviewing the educational concept, which is still valid today, for modern lessons, adjusting the music and texts, and sensibly complementing the teaching contents. The editor who draws on many years of experience as a clarinettist in an orchestra and university lecturer of clarinet has succeeded in adapting the valuable teaching material to the requirements of today while maintaining the basic methodology. The result is a total of 7 volumes:Clarinet Method Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (ED 21761, ED 21762)Clarinet Method Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, with 2 CDs each (ED 21761-50, ED 21762-50): The CDs contain the piano accompaniment for the performance pieces, with and without clarinetTune Book 1 and 2 (ED 21763, ED 21764): piano score of the method's performance pieces, with additional inserted clarinet partDaily Exercises (ED 21765): systematic scale, interval and chord exercises in all keys, complemented and published separately from the original methodDue to trilingual nature of all editions (German, English, French), they can be used universally.About the revision:The musical text is based on the first edition of the method. Only a few differences concerning the articulation as well as some misprints and typographical errors were revised. By deleting the historical fingering instructions for the German fingering system, the clarinet method not only has a clean and, compared to the original, more clearly structured layout, but can also be used universally. The content of the text and the performance directions of the original were linguistically modernized and occasionally extended by further ideas from the teaching practice, such as concepts for warming up, breathing exercises, literature suggestions or tips for daily practising. Further additions of scale and triad studies in all major and minor keys make this method a comprehensive and thorough work of study which not only serves as teaching material for young and adult beginners, but is also a valuable compendium of scale exercises and studies for advanced musicians and is ideal for training velocity and dexterity. The Clarinet Method Vols. 1 and 2 contain not only scales and technical fingering exercises but also Baermann's popular performance pieces, like Romanze (No. 14), which are ideal as performance pieces, yet at the same time train both technique and musical expressiveness. The systematic scale, interval and chord exercises in all keys, however, were removed and are published separately in the volume Daily Exercises (ED 21765) for reasons of clarity. The two textbooks are available with or without CDs. The editions with CDs contain two audio CDs each which were recorded live by the editor and which contain a classic audio version of each performance piece as well as a pure piano version for playing along. / Clarinette

Par MENA MARIA. Here’s an easy arrangement of this popular Christmas song composed by Maria Mena and Martin Sjølie. I have tried to spread the melody to several groups throughout the arrangement. The melody has to be played rhythmically, but also with flow and legato style. Please strive for best possible intonation and balance where the melody is played by several players. At bar 13, flugelhorn and 2/3 cornet plays a little counter theme. Please strive for best possible intonation and balance also on this. Be aware so that the cup mute sound fits the flugelhorn as good as possible. The quarter notes played by horns and trombones at bar 18 have both a harmonic and rhythmic function. This arrangement is made with several cue notes for some instruments. In the score, there are some parts marked with optional. It’s possible to play the arrangement without these parts. The arrangement ends quite and calm, like a peaceful Christmas day. - Reid Gilje - / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Ensemble de Cuivres

(BENDA GEORG) Récitant et Orchestre Barenreiter
A Melodrama Interspersed With Music. Par BENDA GEORG. Georg Anton Benda's melodr...(+)
A Melodrama Interspersed With Music. Par BENDA GEORG. Georg Anton Benda's melodrama „Medea' (1775) was one of the most successful German musical theatre works of the late 18th century. With a libretto by Friedrich Wilhelm Gotter, the work soon became a great influence within the melodrama genre. For several decades, it was performed all over central Europe, developing an impressive reception history. Between 1775 and about 1790, the melodrama was considered an extremely popular (albeit controversial) part of musical theatre, in particular in German-speaking regions. Consequently, Benda's „Medea' was at the center of many heated debates.
Unlike opera, the melodrama does not present the libretto in sung form, but rather, the text is spoken and combined with orchestral music and scenes. The traditional opera forms (aria, recitative, ensemble, chorus) are dissolved and replaced by a new interplay of music, speech, and scenes. A focus on a single protagonist and the quick, delicate alternation between spoken text and music allows for the development of conflicting and contradictory psychological profiles with a heightened intensity within the melodrama.
Near the end of his life, Benda revised the work significantly, drawing from his experience of real performances and their effectiveness. The changes leading to the new version of his „Medea' music were quite extensive, affecting almost every single measure: numerous details of the part writing (tempi, voice leading, rhythms, accompanying figures etc.) were revised, the instrumentation was changed, middle voices were led in a more lively manner, and the music as a whole was shortened and effectively compressed. The composer regarded the latter, modified „Medea' as the authorized version of the work. The premiere took place in 1784 in Mannheim, however, the altered work received little attention since then and has become tangible again for the first time with the OPERA Edition. All previous editions of the work - and along with them, all previous recordings - are based on the earlier version of 1775.
The third volume of the OPERA series 'Medea” contains a linen-bound book and the edirom on a USB stick in credit card format. The number of users permitted to simultaneously use the digital content of the edition is not limited.

I have the pleasure of presenting the new Souza Lima playalong method series. This project is the result of extensive research and careful elaboration aiming at offering representative material on the most varied styles of Brazilian music to professional musicians, students, teachers and all those who take a general interest in this field of music. The focus of this series is on the language of instrumental music nowadays performed in Brazil, based on elements of modern improvisation. Each volume contains two CDs with seven pieces of music, which are presented in the following versions:1. Complete takes – in other words, the full versions of the pieces included in the book, which are performed by all the instruments playing simultaneously; 2. Without melody / solo part – so that the melodic instruments can play along with the recording, executing their own interpretations and practicing improvisations; 3. Without harmony – so that the harmonic instruments can practice the language of accompaniment, especially with regard to the rhythmic vocabulary of each style. 4. Without bass – so that the bassists can practice their traditional task of accompaniment while working on the rhythmic but also the harmonic aspects; 5. Without drums – so that the drummers can practice the rhythms characteristic of each piece of music but also create their own variations. Each book contains the scores in the form of lead sheets in four different versions: in C, Bb, Eb, and bass clef. Due to the widely defined concept of this method, it is important to point out that musicians playing transposing instruments might have to make adaptions when reading the scores. Wind instrumentalists are at liberty to carry out adjustments whenever these are called for in order to facilitate the musical execution. The Souza Lima playalong method series was not exclusively devised for musicians to learn and practise how to read scores and accompany the recordings. Try to be creative and explore each type of music in every way possible. Transcribing solos, rhythmic comping phrases, bass lines and drum grooves, for instance, can be an important tool in order to assimilate the elements of this language. The instrumentalists may place themselves in a new musical situation in addition / Jazz / Recueil / Instruments Mélodiques

| Quatuor (BACEWICZ
GRAZYNA) String Quartet: 2 violins, viola,
cello PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)
Par BACEWICZ GRAZYNA. Studying the sketches for works which a composer considers...(+)
Par BACEWICZ GRAZYNA. Studying the sketches for works which a composer considers to be finished, perfected, is a fascinating activity. It enables one to penetrate the secrets of creative work, to compare the initial outline of a composition with its final version. A sketch is generally left untitled, but it does occur that a composer enhances the status of such a draft by giving it a title, before creating an improved version of that title on the basis of the finished work. The list of compositions by Grazyna Bacewicz, the full catalogue of which is held in the National Library in Warsaw, includes a work for string quartet entitled Quatuor. The manuscript was left undated, but analysis of the music allows us to date this work to the mid-1960s. In the composer?s output from that period, the instrumental tone colouring, often an element that helps to forge a work, takes on particular significance.
The first movement of the Quatuor [à cordes] opens with three fifth-tritone chords ?cast forth?, in succession, in saltando-gettato technique by the cello, second violin and first violin. When we look at the beginning of the Seventh String Quartet, from 1965, such a chord appears in the second bar of the cello part. Further comparisons lead to interesting conclusions. The two opening movements are almost identical, built from the same elements, only spatially arranged in a different way. In the structure of the first movement of the Seventh Quartet, one distinguishes two thematic planes, which shape the narrative after the fashion of a sonata allegro. The first theme is a series of episodes of changing texture ? from passagework to chords and short glissandos repeated with varying intensity. The second theme (Meno mosso) displays an imitative form. Both works feature an inverted reprise. For the first 25 bars of the second movement, a nostalgic Grave, the two works sound identical. The continuation of this movement in the Quatuor [à cordes] is more modest than in the analogous segments of the Seventh Quartet, in terms of both changing textures and the use of differentiated means of articulation. Towards the end, a motif from the beginning of this movement returns in modified form. Both the third movements (Capriccioso in the Quatuor [à cordes], Con vivezza in the Seventh Quartet) take the form of a rondo, and appearing in each of them is the same ?warbling? theme, based on scattered notes with grace notes. The Seventh String Quartet is in three movements. The presumed prototype consists of four movements. The last movement of the Quatuor [à cordes] is a Maestoso resembling a mine of textural ideas for other works of a sonoristic provenance from this period. The introduction, constituting a closed narrative whole and a reference point for the rest of the movement, is followed by segments that are dominated by ostinatos of various kinds, including with the use of harmonics, passages built on the progressive shifting of short motifs, and unevenly spread chords.
Grazyna Bacewicz used material from earlier works more than once in her compositions. Her oeuvre also includes ?twin? pieces merely scored for a different set of instruments. Yet the self-quotation that occurs in the case of the Quatuor [à cordes] and the Seventh String Quartet ? lengthy passages from another of her works reused with minor modifications ? is an unusual situation. It undermines the former?s status as an independent work.

Terry Riley, most commonly associated with the minimalist and experimental schools of music, draws influence from a vast number of sources, including jazz and Indian classical music. In turn, his influence on contemporary composers and music in general is enormous, and with this collection of his Piano Works, you can learn a selection of his fascinating, hypnotic and simply stunning compositions for solo Piano. As one of the founders of western music's minimalist movement, Riley's works have been acclaimed as forays into ever-expanding loops of rhythm and melody, music that, instead of being listened to, immerses and envelops you. His early works, such as 'In C', spearheaded this innovative idea, beginning a career unmatched by other avant-garde composers. With The Piano Works, this collection of Terry Riley sheet music finally brings together some of his best-loved and most acclaimed works for solo Piano, like The Philosopher's Hand and Two Pieces For Piano.Featuring an extensive foreword by Terry Riley himself, this is not just a collection of sheet music, it's almost a work of art: a brilliant publication featuring some beautifully engraved music along with words by a genius composer. Riley gives a vast amount of fascinating biographical and compositional information about his included Piano Works, such as Keyboard Study #1 and #2, Be Kind To One Another (Rag) and The Heaven Ladder Book 7. At times humourous and always eloquent, his foreword tells the story of this composer's journey from humble Piano lessons to masterpieces and an unfathomable influence, it's just great. Finally, at the end of the book, a selection of facsimiles of Riley's own handwritten scores is included, letting you see what the music looks like from the man's own hand.As well as the foreword, there are introductory performance notes for each piece by pianist Sarah Cahill. These expound the techniques, skills and experience necessary to master each piece, but also simply provide some interesting reading before delving into the harmonic and rhythmic rabbit-hole that is Riley's Piano Works. Aside from the theoretical and academic joy that Terry Riley's music affords, the most immediate pleasure is the universal aesthetic beauty of the sounds that will emanate from your Piano as you play these wonderfully whirling and dynamic compositions. As a collection of sheet music, Terry Riley's Piano Works would make a wonderful addition to your music stand. As a book that will bring endless enjoyment to fans not just of Riley himself, but music in general, the foreword and performance notes combined with the magical music make a fantastic edition of a true master's masterpieces. / Piano
