Especially due to the early date of its composition, from the pen of the just turned 22-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach, the cantata The Lord careth for us BWV 196 has its charm, and through its conciseness, as well as its simple scoring, it is quite accessible for performance by ensembles with only modest means. The cantata was composed on the occasion of a wedding in the 1797/08, the details of which cannot be exactly ascertained. The text of the libretto contains no freely written poetry, rather is drawn solely from the Bible (Psalm 115:12-13), there are no recitatives, and the arias are kept very short. The scoring is also of modest propoportions: In addtion to the solo voices soprano, tenor and bass, as well as a four-voice choir, only strings and basso continuo are requried. The cantata begins, as is typical early Bach cantatas, with a short instrumental sinfonia and ends, not with a chorale, but with a choral movement. Only a fragment of the score survives of Bach's Christmas cantata Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe BWV 197a, composed to a text from the Picander cycle of 1728, insufficient to allow a reconstruction of the complete cantata. The fragment begins with the end section of an aria which Bach later transferred into his wedding cantata Gott ist unsre Zuversicht BWV 197. The movement, a lullaby of dreamlike beauty, has long been known as a particular jewel amongst Bach's cantatas. Starting with the surviving end section from the fragmentary score plus Bach's later revision, Diethard Hellmann has convincingly reconstructed the original version so that this aria can also be performed at Christmas. Bach's Wedding Cantata BWV 197 is available separately (Carus 31.197/50). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3119700.

The quartet begins with a 5-note motif, played in unison that permeates melodically and harmonically throughout the movement. The energetic and hard-driven character of the second musical idea propels the music forward with fast moving notes and greater urgency. It often alternates with the more lyrical rendition of the 5-note motif, yielding contrasting sections. After a brief coda, the 5-note motif concludes the movement much the same way it had begun but with greater intensity. The second movement explores the world of fantasy. To some extent the beginning and the ending of the movement function as the opening and closing doors that separate the reality from the dream and subconscious. It is one continuous movement in an arch form that gradually accelerates to an expansive emotional climax and returning steadily to the surface led by an ethereal solo cello. The transcendent ending is similar to the beginning, though half step higher. The third movement begins boldly with the 5-note motif transformed into a dance character in a compound meter. The asymmetrical meter of the Persian folk music influences much of the rhythmic character of the movement. The return of many materials from earlier movements interwoven into the fabric of this movement reinforces the cyclical and organic character of the quarter. Particularly, a mysterious passage, reminiscence of the second movement leading to a brief full-blown ballad is a favorite moment of Ranjbaran's in the quartet. A blazingly virtuosic viola leads the quartet to an uplifting conclusion.

Bach composed the cantata Stay with us, for it draws on toward evening BWV 6 for Easter Monday 1725. In fact, it is certain that a chorale cantata had been planned for that feast day, but for some unknown reason, the annual cycle of chorale cantatas broke off just before Easter 1725. For BWV 6, Bach fell back on a text by an author whose texts he had already set numerous times in his first Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas (which are conspicuous by their ever constant structure and use of two chorale settings). From the gospel for Easter Monday, the story of the Emmaus disciples, only the disappearing daylight and the fear of being left alone are made the subject of discussion. A truly magnificent choral movement opens the cantata. The first chorale for soprano and violoncello piccolo, which Bach later included in his Schubler-Chorale, is also well-known outside of the cantata. Since the days of Renaissance composers - beyond accusations of plagiarism - the admiration for a fellow composer has taken the form of quotations from his works or even new versions of his works. No less a work from the classical period than Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Creation (first performed in 1798), was the basis for the Schopfungsmesse (Creation Mass) by the Salzburg Court and Cathedral Music Director, Luigi Gatti. Gatti heard the oratorio in Salzburg performances conducted by Johann Michael Haydn in 1800. With great skill and sensitivity Gatti was able to underlay the choruses and arias of The Creation with the text of the Mass (at times he reduced and adapted the instrumentation), without doing harm to the admired original. Bach's cantata for solo soprano Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut was written during the summer of 1714 for the Weimar Court service on the 11th Sunday after Trinity. The cantata text by the Darmstadt Court poet Georg Christian Lehms (1684-1717), based on the well-known parable of the Pharisee and the publican, takes on extraordinary potency and intensity of expression in Bach's setting. Bach performed this cantata several times, in Weimar, and also during his years at Cothen aud Leipzig, meanwhile making various alterations. Our publication is based principally on the Leipzig version of 1723, whose instrumentation includes, in addition to the solo oboe and the customary strings and continuo, a violoncello piccolo. The appendix to our edition presents variants for certain movements from Bach's earlier performances, including a Cothen version with obbligato viola da gamba which is particularly interesting for present-day practice. Composed in the late period, around 1740 A lively discussion about the choral movement Nun ist das Heil und die Kraft has been carried on, in which not only all previous assumptions have been called into question - including Bach's authorship - but also show how little we know about the history of this magnificent movement. Even though there is little to refute the 1982 presumption that the work was handed down in the form of an arrangement, the question remains open concerning the identity of the arranger, as well as the alleged form of the original design. Therefore it seemed appropriate to forego any attempts at reconstruct-ion. Rather, for the present new edition the music has been critically examined and commented upon based on the surviving copy from Bach's circle.
