Remarkably for a work by Philip Glass the Cello Concerto No 1 or Concerto For Cello And Orchestra conforms broadly to the three-movement form of classic concerti with fast-slow-fast tempi. This concerto is designated as part ofThe Concerto Project recording series started by Glass in the year 2000 currently in four volumes and including eight concerti.American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolificof the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ His operas among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach are performedacross the globe and he has created work for small and large ensembles film and experimental theatre and founded his own performing group The Philip Glass Ensemble.

(+)
This is a deeply felt concerted work for cello and orchestra. It is in a moderate twentieth century style modal rather than chromatic a tonal work with a mood that is elegiac and dramatic. The Kaddish is a prayerordinarily given during Jewish services for the dead though it never mentions Death. There are traditional melodies and Hebrew cantillation associated with the text but Diamond did not use any of these nor indeed anyparticular Jewish music. The themes he says are his own concept. In describing the form and style of the music Diamond relates the Kaddish to others of his compositions that have some connection to ritual neither theater musicnor abstract music. The music is primarily melodic. Its modal quality suggests the work's Jewish connection but the actual mode is not specifically Jewish in sound. The work rises to a serious and affirmative climaxtowards its end then subsides.

Prokfieff's Concertino For Cello And Orchestra was left unfinished at the time of the composer's death. From the extant material a performing version was prepared by Mstislav Rostropovich for Cello and Piano. Dmitri Kabalevsky then scored the completed Concertino for full Orchestra and the work was premiered by Rostropovich in 1960 at the Moscow Conservatoire. This edition contains the Cello part with a Piano reduction of the Orchesral Score.

(+)
Music Minus One Cello Deluxe 2-CD Set-Franz Josef haydn's beautiful Concerto in C major for Violoncello and orchestra is a treat as well as an absolute requirement for any serious cellist. Strangely though it lay dormant and unknown in a Prague library until it was dicovered in 1961 and brought to light after nearly two hundred years! Since its reintroduction it has become one of the most popular of all violoncello concerti and deservedly so. This concerto was most likely written in the mid-1760s while Haydn was Kapellmeister to Prince Esterhazy. Its splendid memorable themes perfectly showcase the solo instrument against a beautifully and sensitively orchestrated backdrop all of which come together toillustrate Papa Haydn's mastery of form melody and orchestration. Its lovely classical charm beautifully captured here by virtuoso roman Wiszniowski and the Plovdiv Philharmonic will enchant you from beginning to end. Then play it yourself with maestro Todorov and the Plovdiv Philharmonic as your accompanists! This MMO learning and performance edition of one of the great classical cello masterpieces is not to be missed!

Franz Joseph Haydn: Cello Concerto In C Hob.VIIb: Cello: Instrumental Work

(+)
Haydn’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in C major (Hob. VIIb:1) was probably composed between 1762 and 1765 when he was already director of music to Prince Esterh zy. It may have been writtenfor the cellist in the court Orchestra Joseph Weigl (1740-1820) for whom Haydn most likely also wrote the solo Cello parts in his early symphonies. Weigl was a member of the Esterh zy ensemble from 1761 to 1769 andthereafter served as a principle cellist in various Viennese ensembles. The concerto was rediscovered by Oldrich Pulkert who in 1961 found an eighteenth-century manuscript copy (Prag National Museum Fonds Radenin) andpublished the concerto in 1962. Previously the existence of this piece was known only through Haydn’s entry in his private list of works (the so-called ‘Entwurf’ [‘draft’] catalogue). The Orchestral setting ismodest: besides the Strings (with a non-obligato Bassoon doubling the Bass part) there are two Oboes and two Horns which are reserved almost exclusively for the tutti passages. This Piano reduction is based on the text givenin the complete edition of Haydn’s works as edited by the Joseph Haydn Institute Cologne (Joseph Haydn Werke Series III Vol.2 with Preface and Critical Report published by G. Henle Verlag Munich 1981). The Cello partin the Piano reduction is identical to that of the complete edition and thus follows the Prague source as closely as possible even in the expression marks and in certain peculiarities of notation.

(+)
This work for cello and orchestra was commissioned by the Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. It is the second of ten concerti to be written for principal players of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Thefirst performance was given in February 1989 by William Conway and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by the composer. If Davies's Cello Concerto has already evoked comparisons with Elgar's that is perhaps an indicationnot only of its wealth of solo melody (there is hardly a page where the cello is not singing or if not that then dancing) and of its predominantly slow tempos but also of its musical stature. This second Strathclyde concertois a virtuoso piece for the entire ensemble which is used almost throughout as a clutch of soloists rather than as a tutti block. The general tone is one of passionate but interior dialogue especially in the opening Moderato andthe slow movement; and though the finale is more extrovert the work ends back in quietness and rumination. This book contains the solo cello part and a piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Original Version. Schumann?s Cello Concerto Rediscovered In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer?s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków. This Full Score matches the separately available edition for Cello and Piano (EP 73488). Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher. Only modern Urtext edition based on Schumann?s original 1850 manuscript Many new corrections and clarifications, especially to the cello part Scholarly preface detailing history of the work and this edition by editor Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music London Cello Part contains Josephine Knight's fingering and bowing suggestions Critical Commentary Cello and piano edition available separately from Edition Peters: orchestral parts available for rental Recording of the Concertstück featuring Josephine Knight available from Dutton Robert Schumann?s tragic last years have mired many of his greatest works in unnecessary doubt. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. ?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.'

Composed by Marin Marais La Folia is a piece for Cello and Orchestra. Arranged by Paul Bazelaire this edition presents the scores for Cello and Piano and can be played by advanced players. This melodious composition is based on “The folies of Spain” in terms of theme and rhythms and the arrangement was created for the Paris Conservatoire contest. While the beginning of the piece is quite slow it has some faster parts that are more cheerful. Marin Marais (1656-1728) was a French composer and master of the Viol. He wrote many pieces for the Viol some trio pieces and some orchestras.
