It relates the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into Purgatory. LitanyĀ is sung by the chorus (Ć¢Ā€Ā˜AssistantsĆ¢Ā€Ā™) after GerontiusĆ¢Ā€Ā™ deathbed prayer. ElgarĀ disapproved of the use of theterm 'oratorio' for the work though his wishes are not always followed. The piece is widely regarded asĀ Elgar's finest choral work and some consider it his masterpiece.Sir Edward ElgarĀ was an English composer many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Such is the strength of Handel's word setting that this empathic, triumphal paean retains its appeal in spite of the cultural overexposure and controversy to which it has been subjected, remaining a firm favourite with choirs. The premiere of Messiah was in Dublin in 1742 as the high point of a full season of Handel's work.
