Winter Cantata / Vinterkantate (1976) by Per Norgard for a variable ensemble of soloist, mixed choir and instruments (minimum: vocalist and organ). Programme Note: When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973), I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig: The Year and Choral Hymn. These three tunes were derived from the same material as the second movement of the 3rd Symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships at the same time - like fractals - which inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based on these melodies: Frost Psalm, Winter Cantata, Winter Hymn, Cantica and others. One of these 'Sarvig melodies' is now included in the new Danish Hymnbook, under the title Aret(The Year). Ole Sarvig's poem Aret (The Year) is Danish, perhaps Scandinavian in character, but its symbolic atmosphere is global (now snow is covering the whole earth). The basic composition of this cantata - based on Sarvig's many verses - was done by letting soloist, choir and instruments change in feelings and moods: from the almost silent, inward-looking beginning (I: Chorale dolorosa) to a dancelike and happy optimism (II: A heaven germ on winged foot thrust deep into the earth its root), followed by nightmarish tone rows as the year-wheel of fortune is turning (III: Sacrifice - The Year) and the temptations of the snake (IV: In Paradiso) - to the allegorical fights between egoism and altruism (V:The Cycle - Autumn. Purgatory) before the waiting for a disaster- atmosphere at the end of this choral Odysse. Winter Cantata was from the beginning (1976) designed as an open work, to be arranged by different combinations of soloists, choir and (different) instruments. The printed version by Per Norgard and Ivan hansen for soloist, mixed choir and instruments (obo, violin, trombone, vibraphone/percussion and organ) is from 1990. The work is available in both the (original) Danish version (Vinterkantate) and an English version (Winter Cantata), translated by Helen and Ole Sarvig. (Per Norgard).

Written for soprano saxophone, marimba and percussion. Time After Time was written for the Yesaroun' Duo (comprising multi-percussionist Sam Solomon & saxophonist Eric Hewitt) and marimbist Nancy Zeltsman. I set out to write a piece that was primarily energetic and rhythmically challenging enough for two percussionist and one honorary percussionist to play. The title refers to the fact that all the material recycles itself at different speeds. The marimba's long, quasi-chorale lines proceed, initially, without noticing the rhythmic shifts and upheaval below. Halfway through the piece, a jagged marimba solo features the instrument's precise, dance-like qualities, and after being joined by the saxophone and percussion, propels the whole ensemble towards the rhythmic and harmonic excesses of the final section.

The character of the opening movement, Allegro, is determined by the sonata form with two themes. In the course of its development, the first theme takes on a jazz-like diction. In contrast, the second theme has the character of a ländler (folk dance in 3/4 time). As the movement continues, interactions and contrasts between the two themes create charming moments. The second movement, Sostenuto, has the form of an arch. Above a pedal-point, the melodic material of the movement is presented. In Arioso, chorale-like episodes alternate with recitative-like insertions. At the medial section of the movement, the Gregorian hymn Veni creator spiritus is heard---played by the saxophone. A substantially reduced reprise closes the movement in extreme pianissimo. The final movement, Presto, with its variable metrical structure, has a rondo-like character. Three different musical ideas emerge and are tossed together into a colourful mixture. A terse Stretta concludes this playfully virtuoso movement. Arranged for E-flat alto saxophone and piano. Titles: Allegro * Sostenuto * Presto.

Symphony for Organ (2013) is cast as a dramatic progression from darkness into light. The first movement, Masque, is extremely violent and bleak. The title is used with a touch of irony--for this is not a masque of courtly diversion, but rather a furious struggle against the darkness, played out in a series of dramatic episodes following a Tudor-era formal design. The ending builds to a dramatic peak, and leaves us in shell-shocked silence. The second movement, Sarabande, begins quietly and mournfully, and gradually gains in fervency. A faster middle section is a spinning dance before the return of the opening music. In the coda, the light gradually approaches. The third movement, Chorale, evokes the colors of a new dawn. The music of the first movement's struggle gradually becomes washed in the blaze of morning. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 21' Composed: 2013 Published by: Zimbel Press.

An essential feature of attitudes prevailing in the days of Luther was the ubiquitous concern with death and dying, assailed by plague, wars and the never-ending dangers of daily life. The associated fears sometimes escalated to the grotesque, as in paintings by Hieronymus Bosch, and the 'dance of death' was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale of 1524 In the very midst of life / we see death all around us (the Erfurt Enchiridion) is based on the Gregorian Media vita in morte sumus that emerged in France in about 750, evoking thoughts of mortality in its outline form.

The edition is the first part of the commissioned work Our Lady's Minstrel. While Prelude paraphrases the famous chorale Salve Regina in a slow waltz, the gipsy-like cheerful waltz of Dance forms a stark contrast to it. The whole work is completed by Three Poems for soprano and organ (ED 22299).
