The Peasant Cantata BWV 212 is unique in Bach's cantata output both in content and musically. Although it belongs to Bach's homage cantatas, the text deals only indirectly with praise for a new chamberlain. Rather, the eloquent characters portray situations from rural life, which are also reflected in the music: Bach often drew on well-known dance movements and folk tunes. Because of this the cantata as a whole seems less 'academic' than his (surviving) sacred vocal music. Just two arias were composed in the typical da capo structure in which the musicians' abilities are put to the test. But because of the shortness of the other movements, the cantata is extremely varied. Picander's humorous text makes the cantata extremely versatile, far beyond its original purpose. Love from a Stranger was a 'thriller' starring Ann Harding and Basil Rathbone, based on an Agatha Christie short story, Philomel Cottage. As well as Britten's score, the film also included excerpts from Grieg's Peer Gynt music, and a contemporary dance band. Not all of the present score was used - No. 3, Brighton, was omitted and cuts were made in nos. 5 and 6. In the latter, a savage cut deleted the references to the music of the other numbers in bars 13-20, including the trombone's scale, which alludes to a scene in which a child practices the piano unseen. Britten was not happy with the way his music was used, and this was to remain his only work for the commercial cinema composed in 1936.

Kodály summarized the significance of folk music in the preface to the first edition of this publication: ''It is such an integral part of the life of a healthy nation that we find it everywhere: it is present in art, in public education, in the manifestations of social life. Béla Bartók often used musical material from his folk music collections for his compositions. His Sonatina, originally written for solo piano in 1915, was based on songs that he collected in Transylvania. The three movements (1. Bagpipers - Molto moderato, 2. Bear Dance - Moderato, and 3. Finale - Allegro vivace) were orchestrated by Bartók in 1931. Shortly before Bartók's orchestral transcription was finished, violinist Gertler Endre's transcript for violin and piano was completed. Gertler and Bartók knew each other personally and, in fact, first made each other's acquaintance as a result of their shared experience with their respective transcriptions.
