Avec ce présent ouvrage, nous nous attachons à une période bien particulière, qui se situe en France dans les années 30, et qui a vu la naissance d?un jazz tout nouveau, que l?on appela jazz gitan, ou parfois swing gitan, ou encore jazz tzigane, et qui deviendra rapidement le jazz manouche, emmené par un musicien de génie : le guitariste Django Reinhardt, manouche né en 1910, dont la famille s?est fixée à Paris dans les années 20. Django Reinhardt a commencé très jeune à jouer dans les bals de la capitale, et c?est grâce à ce métissage entre cette musique des dancings d?une part, la musique d?inspiration tzigane importée en France par les groupes roms et manouche d?autre part, et du jazz, introduit par les soldats américains en 1917 après que les Etats-Unis se soient engagés dans le premier conflit mondial, que ce swing typiquement français a vu le jour. Ce style de jazz a laissé surtout dans les oreilles et les mémoires ce son de cordes, car il s?est rapidement fait connaître par une formation de type violon - 2 guitares - contrebasse, rencontrant un grand succès. C?est un peu oublier l?histoire, car les débuts du jeune Django se sont donc faits dans les salles de danse, partageant avec accordéonistes et clarinettistes les premières notes de ce nouveau genre musical. D?ailleurs, lorsque le violoniste Stéphane Grappelli quitta le quintette du Hot-Club de France pendant les années de guerre, D. Reinhardt le remplaça par un clarinettiste de talent, Hubert Rostaing, et d?autres clarinettistes fameux partageront cette aventure : Alix Combelle, Maurice Meunier ou encore André Ekyan. Nous avons donc essayé de présenter ce courant musical dans cet ouvrage, en illustrant le style par des morceaux calqués sur des standards, et avec des exemples d?improvisation à la manière des grands clarinettistes de l?époque. Sur le CD accompagnant le livre, vous trouverez en première partie les morceaux enregistrés à titre d?exemple, avec le thème suivi de son exemple d?improvisation, et en deuxième partie l?accompagnement seul, par la rythmique (dans la tradition jazz manouche : deux guitares et contrebasse), le playback, sur lequel vous pourrez tester vos interprétations. La note La (440 Hz) est donnée au début du CD, pour vous permettre de vous accorder. Tout au long de l?ouvrage, nous avons réuni quelques éléments qui nous paraissaient importants pour l?apprentissage des codes du jazz en général : les principes de base de l?interprétation, les principaux effets du jazz à la clarinette, le rappel des gammes de base nécessaires à l?improvisation, le rappel des principaux accords et de leurs enchaînements... A la fin, nous avons fait figurer les accords utilisés dans la méthode, les gammes pentatoniques et blues, les grilles de blues et d?anatoles déclinées dans toutes les tonalités, et un petit lexique qui explique quelques mots clés pour une meilleure compréhension.
