Welcome Repertoire Piece Josef Schelb (b. 1894 in Bad Krozingen) belongs to that generation of composers who had to cope with two world wars, severe recessions, and the fatal effects of the Third Reich. Schelb turned to impressionism, expressionism, dodecaphony, and atonality, without, however, firmly settling in any direction, but developing his distinctive personal style out of all this. He is a master of the polyphonic treatment of motives and themes. His Concerto for Englisch Horn and String Orchestra was composed in 1970 in Baden-Baden after he became acquainted with Helmut Koch, the solo English hornist of the former SWF Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden. The three-movement concerto interweaves tonality, dodecaphony, and polyphony in a fascinating and yet discreet manner. A late work of impressive cantabile and yearning poetry, it will quickly secure its place in the up-to-now slim English-horn repertoire.

Concertino is about relationships and how they change over time. My first goal in writing the piece was to create two distinct characters, in this case the Oboe and English Horn. The Oboe begins with a berceuse-like melody, while the English Horn's entrance is more ambiguous and rhythmically jagged. Over the course of the piece, these two characters interact through a variety of musical settings, their material or personalities continually developing. The strings, more than mere accompaniment, provide commentary on the dramatic action, much like a Greek chorus. They establish each musical scene, interact with the two woodwinds, and further develop the musical material. And while there is a strong concertante element in the piece, it is essentially chamber music. There is a conversational quality, a sense of give-and-take between everyone involved that makes the two woodwinds first among equals as opposed to featured concert soloists. Each of the eight instruments has something unique and important to say.Concertino is about relationships and how they change over time. My first goal in writing the piece was to create two distinct characters, in this case the Oboe and English Horn. The Oboe begins with a berceuse-like melody, while the English Horn’s entrance is more ambiguous and rhythmically jagged. Each of the eight instruments has something unique and important to say.

Forsyth's Modern Wind Music is a series of volumes containing exciting and challenging, but not unduly difficult, works by talented English composers of current or recent vintage for recital, study or recreation. Each volume includes three works with piano, one unaccompanied piece, and one piece for two or more players of the instrument. In this volume for horn two aubades by David Ellis and John Golland (Ascent) reflect traditional associations of the instrument, whilst Anthony Gilbert's Two Birds by Kuring-Gai show the horn in an unusual guise and where written whilst the composer was living in the spectacular landscape of New South Wales. James Langley's music is well known to horn players and his fanfare-like Caccia for solo horn and Trident for three horns are both welcome additions to a slender repertory.

Belgian composer Achiel Van Beveren (1904 – 1985) originally composed this Elegie in 1953 as a vocalise for bass voice and piano (also violin and piano) and it was dedicated to Leopold Loomans, one of his students. Achiel's son, Alex Van Beveren, a professional oboe and English horn player later adapted this work for English horn and piano. This publication includes the solo part as playable on English horn, as well as the original vocalise part.

Evarist de Roye's Pastorale and Dance for English horn and piano is a contrasting, two-part composition, written in a style similar to many works of the Belgian and French concours from this time period. The initial publication also included alternate parts for clarinet, alto saxophone and bassoon, which are included in this set, in addition to the English horn part.

I have composed Knots [Musubi] in celebration of the 80th birthday of Heinz Holliger for whom I have the greatest respect. The title was inspired by the Yin and Yang principle, the central concept of the creation of the universe in the East. Polar opposite elements such as man and woman, high and low, light and shadow coexist and complement each other, becoming intertwined without eradicating each other, whilst gradually shaping the harmony of the universe. In this music, the oboe and the English horn, both of which have adistinctive characteristic tone, become entwined and gradually knotted together through arabesque-like appoggiaturas.
