Telemann's setting of Psalm 121 I lift up mine eyes to the hills reveals him to be an admirer of French music. Constructed on the example of a grand motet, each of the movements is patterned after the French model: the model of an overture for the first movement, the echoes of a chaconne in the second, the dotted gigue rhythms of the Canarie in the third. In addition there is the lively exchange between choir and solo ensemble, and much more. The music is full of poetic imagery, whenever the occasion arises, as at the very beginning with the words Ich hebe meine Augen auf, or in a later passage with the text Siehe, der Hüter Israel schläft noch schlummert nicht (Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3912700.

March Prelude: Alnwick Town was commissioned by the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band (with Ray Thompson as conductor) to celebrate their first 25 years. It opens majestically with answering phrases between various sections of the band, leading to a faster march-like section - its main theme echoes the rhythms of the opening material. A bridge passage featuring snippets for saxophones and trumpets leads to a new theme, more legato in nature and repeated after a change of key. The bridge passage returns to herald a restatement of the main theme before the opening material reappears to close the work with a flourish.

Simple yet bold rhythms add excitement, heightened by the fact that every section has an opportunity to play melodic content. The interesting “development†section provides a contrast to the opening and helps to build the suspense before the return of the main theme. The percussion helps to drive the energy of the piece by providing a variety of colorful sounds including a gong solo at the end to signal the knight’s triumph.A knight gallops over the rise of the hill into battle, determination shining in his eyes. He must charge through the treacherous lines and survive in order to preserve his kingdom and his honor. The pounding of the battle drums echoes the desperate pounding of his heart. Swords clash and the hooves of the horses strike the muddy ground. He must run this torturous gauntlet. Will he succeed before it is too late? The Gauntlet is a piece written to sound bold and exciting while also being easy for young players to perform due to the piece’s limited range (comprised of the first seven notes in most method books). Composed in 2012, the two pieces in Sadie Harrison’s Heartoutbursts! take their inspiration from traditional English folk. ' ...in the folk-song there is to be found the complete history of a people, recorded by the race itself, through the heartoutbursts of its healthiest output. It is a history compiled with deeper feeling and more understanding than can be found among the dates and data of thegreatest historian... '(Percy Grainger 1922) In 1905, Joseph Taylor won a Lincolnshire folksong competition with his rendition of Brigg Fair , a song he had learnt from a gypsy. Australian composer Percy Grainger subsequently published a setting in his Lincolnshire Posy , with Delius usingthe tune in his rhapsody, Brigg Fair . Both composers sought to vivify the tradition of English folksong, celebrating not only the ancient tunes and words but also the qualities of particular folksingers like Joseph Taylor. Harrison’s own Australian Heartoutbursts! follow unashamedly in the Grainger tradition with echoes of the original folktunes underpinning both songs Brigg Fair and The Seeds of Love . Although different in character, both texts use similar images as analogies for the joys and despairing associated with love - the lark and violet symbolize youth, the lily as virginity, the red rose as true love, and the willow representing falsehood and abandonment.

In autumn 1895, after returning from New York once and for all, Dvorák took up his former position as teacher at the Prague Conservatory. This clearly had an inspiring impact on him because in the space of just four weeks he composed a new string quartet in G major. Together with the Quartet in A-flat major op. 105, it forms a glorious close to his chamber music oeuvre. Echoes of Bohemian folk music are here mixed with cantabile themes, while his motivic working shows him to be a master at the height of his powers. Even today, it seems almost as if we can feel the composer's satisfaction with this work: “I am working so easily and it is going so smoothly that I could not wish it better.â€.

Fetes galantes was actually planned as a hybrid opera-ballet to a libretto by Debussy's friend Louis Laloy. For this, Laloy arranged selected poetry by Paul Verlaine into three tableaux, replacing an earlier (unstarted) Debussyan project with Charles Morice entitled Crimen amoris. During his last productive summer of 1915, Debussy set a sequence from the start of the first tableau, 'Les Masques', involving stanzas 1 and 3 of the opening song for Mezzetin in Verlaine's comedy Les Uns et les autres. The action is set in a park a la Watteau late one summer afternoon as Mezzetin attempts to entertain a group of nonchalant masqueraders with only the aid of his voice and a mandolin. This appears to have been prefaced by a slower, elegiac introduction reminiscent of the opening of the comtemporary Cello Sonata and it leads to a danced minuet by the masqued dancers which has clear echoes of the piano piece L'Isle Joyeuse (1904). Following Laloy's scenario, the mas-queraders then sing extracts from Verlaine's 'A la promenade' (from Fetes galantes itself). The minuet returns at greater length before being cut short by a chilly gust of wind, after which the park returns to its orginal state (and music) as though nothing had really happened.
