Although the organ works of Sigfrid Karg-Elert are enjoying ever greater popularity, his choral pieces are still waiting to be discovered. This, however, is now only a matter of time. During his middle creative period, Karg-Elert developed his own, unmistakable choral style. His few choral works, which stem from the years 1912 and 1913, unquestionably belong to his major works from this period.

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting Pacific Dreams Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of Pacific Dreams, he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his Pacific Dreams.Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

Continuing with the success of the popular Compatible series, Compatible Duets for Winds Volume 2 contains 29 duets in a variety of styles that can be played with any combination of two wind instruments. Students can develop their chamber-ensemble skills while playing with their friends, no matter what wind instruments they play. Ranging from grade levels 2-3, Compatible Duets for Winds Volume 2 is perfect for band directors looking for new tools for the classroom, and its flexibility makes it a must-have for any wind player.Having students play in small chamber music groups is a very beneficial exercise to improvethe student’s overall musicianship. The simplest form of chamber music is the duet. It is anopportunity for the student to play with a teacher or to play with another student of similarabilities. Aspects of playing such as tone quality, intonation, technique and ensemble skillscan be developed during the process of studying duets. These duets are different in that they have many different performance options, since all ofthe books in this series are compatible. As a former middle-school band director I alwayshad students that wanted to come to the band room during lunch or after school; studentswho just wanted to play with their friends. That was not possible since there was very littleduet material available that was compatible with all of the wind instruments. This bookand the first volume in the series take care of that. A student can now grab their friend,no matter what instrument they play, and have hours of fun playing duets together. Mostimportantly, they will learn something in the process. The duets have been generally placed in the book in order of difficulty and cover a rangeof keys that are appropriate for this ability level. Special care was given to making surethat both of the duet parts were on a similar ability level and that each line was givenan opportunity to play a lead role at some point during the arrangement. Also, most ofthe musical markings are attached to both systems, and the point size of the music wasconsidered for ease of reading. It is my hope that this collection will help to stimulate and enhance the musicianship of theperformers. It was a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to put together this collection.I hope it is a useful tool for you for years to come.

Joe Duddell's Magnificat and Nunc Dimtis was commissioned by Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts with funding from Kevin Jones and Laura Woodside-Jones and received its first performance by the Choir of Royal Holloway conducted by Rupert Gough at the 2011 Presteigne Festival. Duddell has acknowledged in the past that whilst composing any piece of music, problems arise that require solutions and this new setting of the Mag and Nunc is no different. The main challenge for a composer who is openly agnostic is the historical weight behind the liturgical text but taking both musical and philosophical inspiration from composers such as Holst and Tippett, Duddell's setting is a joyous and uplifting one. The work is dedicated to George Vass.

Light the fire, James. We’ll take our digestive by the crackling of the hearth. Such were the thoughts that came to mind as I started listening to Guy Van Nueten’s new record. Because, yes, there is a certain aristocracy to this music. There’s the feeling of autumn and you immediately long to warm yourself on the sounds that issue from Van Nueten's bony fingers. But it could just as well be a car ride through soft rain at nightfall, where trees become freakish phantoms, and here and there a villa looms like a light beacon. Pacman is a record that makes you hunt for images, films you have seen before, feelings you have known and wish to relive, like a somewhat forbidden fruit, a secret pleasure. Melancholy? Absolutely. A vague sadness to make a person purr like a contented cat? Certainly. Yet at the same time, Van Nueten is cunning. While ensuring that his music pleases you, at the end of some compositions he’ll suddenly come up with a theme that he’ll stop abruptly, so that the notes remain hanging like snapshots of aerial acrobats in action. It is also investigative music as if Guy himself does not wish to know just where he will finish up. There is a stubbornness to it, an elegant fight perhaps between composer and pianist. It pursues you – exactly like a Pacman, in fact, chomping away at digital pieces of your heart. Yet it never seems to dissolve into thin air: time and again, right from the first listen, he makes you long to hear more. It is music that should protect a person like a secret, like an illegal fire in a forest that warms your hands and fills your head with dreams. It smells like cedar, this piano music. Or like a nice cigar offered to you by the imaginary James, who whispers: The fire is crackling, sir. Just as you like it. At which point the enchantment begins all over again.

This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringen’s arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.
