Craig McLeish writes of The Negro Speaks of Rivers - Langston Hughes (1902-1967)...(+)
Craig McLeish writes of The Negro Speaks of Rivers - Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was the first black American to earn his living from writing. He was an innovator of jazz poetry, becoming part of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s. He wrote plays, short stories, novels, and his poetry was widely read. He was also a journalist, columnist and lecturer. The Negro Speaks of Rivers was perhaps his earliest published work, written when only 17 and while travelling by train to Mexico to visit his father. As the train crossed the Mississippi he suddenly began thinking about how rivers had impacted on Negro history, particularly in the fight against slavery. The four rivers mentioned in the poem lent themselves to using musical influences from those particular regions. However, I have tried to keep these links fairly tenuous to avoid overt pastiche. A few years ago I was fortunate enough to work with Congolese musicians. These sessions led to the intricate rhythms in The Congo . The Mississippi mentions New Orleans, so a jazz fugue seemed the most appropriate compositional device to weave into the texture. The spirit of The Nile was gauged from many hours listening avidly to Egyptian music. Craig McLeish began his musical life as a chorister at St Paul's Cathedral. As a bass guitarist, conductor, musical arranger and composer, he has worked with a wide variety of groups in several genres, and scored a hit with the cult pop band 'Fat and Frantic'. He is musical director of Young Voices UK, and conducts several youth and community choirs in and around Milton Keynes. / Choeur SATB

Back in Print! If you want to infuse your keyboard playing with modern, up-to-the-minute sounds used by Andy LaVerne, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, John Abercrombie and the cutting edge musicians of tomorrow, this book will be invaluable. Written by jazz pianist Andy LaVerne, who is celebrated for his interesting sense of harmony and sophisticated style, it shows you hundreds of keyboard runs - the streams of notes jazz artists use to glide across the keyboard with interesting melodic touches and chord colors. These runs are shown with the chords and chord progressions that make them work best - on seventh chords, diminished chords, minor chords, altered chords, and more. Some are written to work with the most common chord progressions, and some are designed to fit just one chord. Some will work with almost any chord at all - and Andy tells you which ones. Youll get each run in several keys, with chord applications and appropriate fingering tips. Practice them slowly for developing great jazz-style finger dexterity. Then, bring them up to speed so you can insert them into your own improvisations. Youll discover exactly how contemporary musicians get those great, unusual sounds. Every page is a learning experience and youll gain a whole new repertoire on runs, licks, and fills - remarkable sounds and colors to make your playing richer than ever. As a teacher and a workshop leader, Andy LaVerne has helped thousands of students become better at performing. With this first-of-a-kind guide to contemporary piano runs and riffs, he will help you too!

for Modern Jazz Guitar. Par MILLER KEVIN. Since the arrival on the jazz scene of John Coltrane, more and more guitarists are looking to incorporate colors into their language which are more dissonant than those generally heard within the realm of jazz guitar. As improvisers, saxophonists and all woodwind players have a certain advantage in that the keys on their instruments are arranged linearly with one or two chromatic pitches associated with each finger. Compared to the sax, the note locations on the guitar fretboard are much less intuitive. It seems a natural process then, for guitarists to gain fluency in improvisation by studying saxophone lines and articulation techniques.Kevin Miller has studied with several stellar teachers including Vic Juris and Rodney Jones. His knowledge of jazz history and the linear and harmonic techniques of non-guitarist giants of jazz like McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane is truly impressive. He is also very adept at transcribing and analyzing the harmonic concepts and articulation techniques used in saxophone solos and making them palatable to guitarists in notation and tablature.Miller brings it all to bear in this book, focusing on giving you new options originating from jazz masters such as John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner, for dealing with common harmonic situations within the world of jazz such as a stagnant minor chord or II-V-I. These options venture ?outside? of the basic harmonic framework, but usually settle back into the core harmonic territory. Not only is the information made accessible through numerous transcriptions of saxophone lines and techniques, Miller provides ways to internalize this material so it can be used ?in an organic way while improvising'. / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Etude / Guitare

for piano. Par KOECHLIN CHARLES. This first print is a rarity: the highly virtuoso, evocative 'Nocturne' owes its creation to an instrument that has only survived as a museum piece.
Gustave Lyon, the director of the French instrument maker Pleyel, commissioned Charles Koechlin as well as several other French composers (such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel) to write works for the 'harpe chromatique' developed by him around 1900. In contrast to the common pedal harp, the chromatic harp allows for an unlimited modulatory range. Nevertheless, the instrument did not gain much acceptance and remained exotic.
Koechlin was aware of the difficulty of introducing and establishing new instruments. He therefore, from the very beginning, had the piano as an alternative of equal value in mind when writing his Nocturne./ Répertoire / Piano

In this one-hour instructional DVD James Alan Shelton and George Shuffler demonstrate and teach the guitar techniques that helped change the role of the guitar in bluegrass music. The music of the Stanley Brothers and Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys has featured lead guitar work since Bill Napier and George Shuffler brought the guitar to the forefront of the Stanley's music in the late 1950s. This video begins with James Alan Shelton, the current lead guitar player for Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, picking a tune with the legendary George Shuffler. James then interviews George regarding the development of his 'crosspicking? guitar technique. George demonstrates the technique and provides a guitar solo to one of the tunes he helped to make a bluegrass standard, 'Will You Miss Me.? George and James then pick 'Katy Dear? together and demonstrate their crosspicking talents. The instructional portion of the video begins with James Alan Shelton demonstrating the crosspicking roll and providing several exercises which will serve to train your right hand to gain skill with the crosspicking technique. James then teaches a 'turnaround? to 'Rank Stranger? which utilizes the crosspicking technique to 'fill in the gaps? between vocal lines. He then shows how to take the simple melody line of a song, 'Uncloudy Day,? and incorporate the crosspicking technique between the melody notes. Next, James teaches a crosspicking break to 'Bury Me Beneath the Weeping Willow? and follows that tune by demonstrating how to transform a Carter style guitar solo into a crosspicking solo using the song 'Wildwood Flower? as an example. The next section of the video features James teaching two of his original flatpicking tunes 'Road to Coeburn? and 'Tom's Creek.? This is followed by a fingerstyle performance of Ralph Stanley's favorite guitar number, 'Cannonball Blues.? James concludes the instructional portion of the video by talking about his selection of guitar strings, picks, and capos and provides 'tricks of the trade? to help you keep your flatpick in good shape. George and James both talk about their signature model Huss and Dalton guitars and the video concludes with George and James picking 'Banks of the Ohio? together. All of the songs that are taught in the video are transcribed in the accompanying transcription book. / Guitare (Flatpick) Et Plectre

Edizione critica a cura di Alessandro Borin - Antonio Moccia (testi in italiano e inglese). Par ANTONIO VIVALDI. 'With Il Teuzzone, RV 736, the collected edition of operas by Antonio Vivaldi gains a new volume that brings to completion the pair of operas written by the ?Red Priest? for Mantua. Premiered during the last days of 1718, the opera preceded by a few months the production of Tito Manlio, RV 738 (PR 1411). This edition of Teuzzone, the first in modern times, is based on the two complete sources to have survived: a copy originating from the composer?s own archive (Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino, Raccolta Mauro Foà 33) and the one today housed in Berlin (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ? Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Musikabteilung, N. Mus, ms. 125), which was made for the Mantuan production. Additionally, numerous secondary sources have been collated. An appendix to the volume contains the musical materials discarded by Vivaldi during the period preceding the opera?s premiere. The supporting texts for the edition report on new findings that have emerged from archival and documentary research. It has been established, for instance, that the aria Tu, mio vezzoso (I.03) is a borrowing from Alessandro Severo by Antonio Lotti, while the aria Tornerò, pupille belle (II.02) is a reworking of Nelle mie selve natie, an aria in Scanderbeg, RV 732. These examples reveal the pasticcio-like nature of this Vivaldi opera. In the section concerned with the description of the sources, which includes a meticulous codicological examination of the source in Turin, a bold attempt has been made to reconstruct the phases that the composition of Vivaldi?s opera underwent, an operation that sheds light on the inner workings of Vivaldi?s atelier. In addition, the close relationship of this score to a work with the same title staged in Turin with music by G. Casanova and A. S. Fiorè is analysed. '/ Répertoire / Chant et Orchestre

(LERDAHL FRED) String Quartet: 2 violins, viola,
cello [Score and Parts] Schott
Chaconne. Par LERDAHL FRED. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissione...(+)
Chaconne. Par LERDAHL FRED. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach’s D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms’s Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern.
My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. Fred Lerdahl/ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Par PERGOLESI GIOVANNI BATTISTA. In 1732 Giovanni Battista Pergolesi composed a setting of the Vespers in honor of St. Emidius, Naples’s patron saint and protector against earthquakes. All that has survived are the introit Domine ad adjuvandum and three psalm settings: Dixit Dominus, Laudate and Confitebor. Malcolm Bruno’s reconstruction consists of Pergolesi’s Hymnus, Magnificat, several short instrumental interpolations, and the contrafactum of a secular cantata for the Salve Regina, thereby presenting a full cross-section of Pergolesi’s artistic evolution. The reconstructed Vespers ranges from the early Confitebor, with its allusions to Vivaldi, to the late Salve Regina with its reminiscences of thefamous Stabat Mater; from contrapuntal choral writing to operatic arias; and from the magnificently scored Dixit to the almost intimate Laudate. The present edition follows the original sources as closely as possible and contains an appendix with detailed notes on performance practice. Performance material available for hire Effective reconstruction of a full-length work Cross-section of Pergolesi’s sacred music Clear and easy-to-play piano reduction/ Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur Mixte (SATB) et Orchestre

Vol. 10/II - Edizione critica a cura di Alessandro Borin-David Bryant (testi in italiano e inglese). Par GABRIELI ANDREA. Vol. 10 of the Complete Works, articulated in two parts, contains the music found exclusively in manuscript and printed anthologies compiled prior to the great sixteenth-century Venetian composer?s death in 1585. Broadly speaking, Gabrieli?s contributions to collective anthologies fall into the following categories: 1) celebratory compositions, in several cases conceived as individual contributions to madrigal cycles by various composers in honour of more or less prominent Venetian or other personalities; 2) compositions originating in social and cultural circles close to Gabrieli; products of the composer?s habitual interaction with patrons, poets and musicians in mid sixteenth-century Venice, these compositions are published in anthologies containing similar works by other composers in Gabrieli?s milieu; 3) individual madrigals inserted in generic multi-author anthologies. Vol. 10/I features eight compositions on texts in Latin, Italian and ?stradioto? dialect (a linguistic concoction in which words of Greek origin appear against a background of simulated Venetian dialect). These include Gabrieli?s contribution to a Corona of nine sonnets by various composers on the death of Annibale Caro, the celebrated man-of-letters whose production comprises a highly successful Italian translation of Virgil?s Aeneid. The entire Corona is edited in the Complete Works. Gabrieli?s presence in multi-author anthologies follows a predictable pattern. The young composer?s earliest madrigals appear in editions of music by well-established authors (Vincenzo Ruffo, Cipriano de Rore) or collective anthologies edited by enterprising local musicians or other cultural figures (Giulio Bonagiunta, a singer at St Mark?s; the Venetian poet, actor and musician Antonio Molino). These give way to anthologies of music by highly celebrated composers, to which Gabrieli, his reputation now secure, accedes by invitation; and, beginning in 1583, non-Italian publications (increasingly common in the years following the composer?s death). / Date parution : 2022-04-26/ Recueil / Orchestre

This work is part of a cycle of five short pieces for a single instrument and piano, focused on the five ages in the cosmogony of Ancient Mexican civilisation. The peoples of the Mexican highlands believe that time follows specific cycles and that the world was created following the pattern of 'trial and error'. The creation of the world is divided into several periods which are termed 'suns' (we are currently living in the fifth phase named 'Ollin'). Each period will be brought to an end through a natural catastrophe.Solei-Feu refers to the first attempt to create a world out of a rain of fire (nahui quiahuitl). The element of fire is reflected in the musical soundscape of this work, constructed from rampant, rhythmic motifs, fragmented splinters, spinning upswings and impacts reverberating through space. An intimate dialogue develops between violin and piano on the basis of extremely simple figures. Interconnecting lines and dense musical material are thrown against each other in a play of contrasting registers and blended tonal colouring, creating a mysterious and disturbing mythological universe coloured by its ontological pessimism.
