Grieg Holberg Suite (From Holberg\'s Time) Op.40 (Full Score) Suite in the Olden Style for String Orchestra To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Later Grieg arranged his ?Suite in the Olden Style? for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions. And unjustly so, because the two early sonatas are captivating in their joy to play and their fresh, youthful tone. And what is more, they can also be played by advanced students due to their somewhat lesser technical demands. Grieg's incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's drama 'Peer Gynt? contains some of his best-known compositions, such as 'Morning Mood? and 'In the hall of the Mountain King?. Grieg later extracted the most beautiful pieces to form two orchestral suites and arranged himself these versions for piano solo and piano four-hands. There was a surprise in store for us when we were preparing our Urtext edition. In the autograph and the first print run, the second suite contained another movement, the 'Dance of the Mountain King's Daughter?, which Grieg deleted shortly afterwards. This charming dance appears in the appendix to our edition - printed again for the first time in 120 years! The Norwegian pianist and Grieg expert Einar Steen-Nøkleberg was co-editor for our edition and also provided the new fingerings. / Piano 4 Mains

88 Grieg arranged four pieces from his incidental music for Ibsen’s verse drama Peer Gynt to form an orchestral suite (Op. 46). This was followed in 1891 by a second orchestral suite (Op. 55) again comprising 4 pieces. Both suites quickly became established in the concert repertoire and contributed significantly to Grieg’s international fame. He made piano arrangements of both suites and published them simultaneously with the orchestral suites in 1888 and 1893. Grieg subsequently made further adjustments in the piano pieces: shortening some, for example ‘Morning’, and expanding others like ‘The Death of Åse’. Overall, Grieg reduces the dramatic orchestral conception in favour of a more intimate expression and more restrained effects.
