Par GRIEG EDVARD. The piano concerto in a minor stands out in Edvard Grieg’s oeuvre. Besides this famous concerto, he composed only a few other large orchestral works. Because of its popularity even in Grieg’s lifetime, it was often performed, not least by the composer himself. So it is not surprising that Grieg made many changes to the score up to 1907. But at the same time, the concerto’s size, form and substance remained completely unaltered. Interventions in the piano part basically involved subtleties of nuance, and only a very few places in the music text were altered. The situation was different with the orchestration. Here Grieg was keen to experiment and kept filing away at the orchestra sound right up to the last. Melodies were moved to other instruments, accompanying string chords were reconstructed, and above all the list of scored instruments was changed. The main source of the Urtext edition by Ernst-Günter Heinemann is the new edition of the score originally published in 1907 by C. F. Peters, thus several years after the first edition of 1872. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Version for Piano four-Hands-Grieg?s incidental music for Henrik Ibsen?s drama ?Peer Gynt? contains some of his best-known compositions such as ?Morning Mood? and ?In the hall of the Mountain King?.Grieg later extracted the most beautiful pieces to form two Orchestral suites and arranged himself these versions for Piano solo and Piano four-hands. There was a surprise in store for Henle when they werepreparing this Urtext edition. In the autograph and the first print run the second suite contained another movement the ?Dance of the Mountain King?s Daughter? which Grieg deleted shortly afterwards. Thischarming dance appears in the appendix to this edition printed again for the first time in 120 years! The Norwegian pianist and Grieg expert Einar Steen-Nøkleberg was co-editor for this edition and alsoprovided the new fingerings.

88 Grieg arranged four pieces from his incidental music for Ibsen’s verse drama Peer Gynt to form an orchestral suite (Op. 46). This was followed in 1891 by a second orchestral suite (Op. 55) again comprising 4 pieces. Both suites quickly became established in the concert repertoire and contributed significantly to Grieg’s international fame. He made piano arrangements of both suites and published them simultaneously with the orchestral suites in 1888 and 1893. Grieg subsequently made further adjustments in the piano pieces: shortening some, for example ‘Morning’, and expanding others like ‘The Death of Åse’. Overall, Grieg reduces the dramatic orchestral conception in favour of a more intimate expression and more restrained effects. Easier Piano Pieces 11-The Poetic Tone-Pictures from Opus 3 were published in 1865 when Grieg was 21 and although they are more difficult than the Lyric Pieces they do not contain anything above Grade 6/7 standard. The Lyric Pieces from Opus 12 were published in 1867 when Grieg was 24 and are - with the exception of some of the folk-song arrangements from Opus 17 - the easiest pieces Grieg ever wrote. There can be little doubt that they were a conscious attempt to produce attractive material for the beginner.
