Classical Guitar Solos - Favorite Sonatinas. In this book, guitarist and music historian David Grimes presents 20 ?small sonatas? or sonatinas, complete with detailed performance notes and bio sketches of each of the contributing composers: Leonhard von Call, Matteo Carcassi, Ferdinando Carulli, Mauro Giuliani, Francesco Molino, and Antonio Nava. While flexible, the early 19th-century sonatina form usually consists of 2 - 4 contrasting movements, here in guitar-friendly keys, making these pieces ideal for performance by intermediate-level students. In all but the most challenging passages, Grimes has intentionally kept fingering to a minimum to allow students to form their own concept of this critical skill. Then, as many bass notes in these pieces are played on open strings, the player must develop a sense of when to selectively damp dissonant tones or observe a rest? exposing and overcoming yet another shortcoming in the education of many guitarists. Most classic guitar teachers are familiar with the easy didactic studies by Carcassi, Carulli and Giuliani; Favorite Sonatinas offers more highly developed, but not yet virtuoso pieces by the same Italian triumvirate? plus three more composers in a similar vein? promoting confident, enjoyable sight-reading by guitarists of all levels.

Night Dance was written between September 1986 and January 1987 to a commission from David Starobin who gave the first performance on 5 April 1987 at the Wigmore Hall London. It is a miniature tone-poem depicting ascene of an old man sitting in a doorway at dusk. He is playing a guitar and begins by plucking the lowest string as though searching for what he wishes to play. As the music gains momentum it gradually moves upwards by meansof the guitar’s open strings and breaks into a dance. Now it is dark and a nightmarish band of dancers passes by the old guitarist. The dance jerky and uneven develops melodically and harmonically the initial material of thepiece. After a climax the dancers move on - the dance music subsides and a nocturne is heard interrupted periodically by the music of the dance in the distance. Maybe this is not geographical distance but the distance oftime perhaps the whole episode has been mere memories. The piece ends musingly with the motive from which it began.

The ragtime and early jazz music pioneers during the first decades of the last c...(+)
The ragtime and early jazz music pioneers during the first decades of the last century didn???t know that the sounds they created would echo in the music that people loved for years to come. They started an American music traditionthat is alive to this day. I was born and raised in Sweden and I have always enjoyed the music from that era but being a Guitarist I never thought that playing back-up in a jazz band was for me. I???d rather do something with thesesongs so that they would fit my approach playing fingerstyle Guitar. Many of the early jazz songs and of course classical ragtime often is played as Piano music with a steady left hand playing bass notes and chords togetherwith the right hand playing a syncopated melody on top. This style of playing is very similar to the alternating bass style on the Guitar. So these tunes easily lend themselves to a fingerstyle arrangement. With classicalragtime I approach arranging by transcribing the original Piano sheet-music. The important thing is to find keys that suit the Guitar and then decide what notes not to play since it is not technically possible to play all thenotes in a Piano score on the Guitar. I like to play in keys that will give me the opportunity to use open strings in the bass while the melody moves up and down the neck. This is especially important since my aim is to make myarrangements not too difficult to play so that the player can concentrate on the music instead of being too concerned with the technical aspects of his/her playing. The most important challenge though is to make the tune soundlike Guitar music not Piano music played on the Guitar.

In this one-hour instructional DVD James Alan Shelton and George Shuffler demonstrate and teach the guitar techniques that helped change the role of the guitar in bluegrass music. The music of the Stanley Brothers and Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys has featured lead guitar work since Bill Napier and George Shuffler brought the guitar to the forefront of the Stanley's music in the late 1950s. This video begins with James Alan Shelton, the current lead guitar player for Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, picking a tune with the legendary George Shuffler. James then interviews George regarding the development of his 'crosspicking? guitar technique. George demonstrates the technique and provides a guitar solo to one of the tunes he helped to make a bluegrass standard, 'Will You Miss Me.? George and James then pick 'Katy Dear? together and demonstrate their crosspicking talents. The instructional portion of the video begins with James Alan Shelton demonstrating the crosspicking roll and providing several exercises which will serve to train your right hand to gain skill with the crosspicking technique. James then teaches a 'turnaround? to 'Rank Stranger? which utilizes the crosspicking technique to 'fill in the gaps? between vocal lines. He then shows how to take the simple melody line of a song, 'Uncloudy Day,? and incorporate the crosspicking technique between the melody notes. Next, James teaches a crosspicking break to 'Bury Me Beneath the Weeping Willow? and follows that tune by demonstrating how to transform a Carter style guitar solo into a crosspicking solo using the song 'Wildwood Flower? as an example. The next section of the video features James teaching two of his original flatpicking tunes 'Road to Coeburn? and 'Tom's Creek.? This is followed by a fingerstyle performance of Ralph Stanley's favorite guitar number, 'Cannonball Blues.? James concludes the instructional portion of the video by talking about his selection of guitar strings, picks, and capos and provides 'tricks of the trade? to help you keep your flatpick in good shape. George and James both talk about their signature model Huss and Dalton guitars and the video concludes with George and James picking 'Banks of the Ohio? together. All of the songs that are taught in the video are transcribed in the accompanying transcription book. / Guitare (Flatpick) Et Plectre

The Beginner Guitarist has been born out of 20 years of teaching experience. With the exception of right and left-hand fingering advice this approach is used throughout the series. The entire series has the goal of being a measuredand progressive tutor. Ideas are usually introduced one at a time to avoid overloading the student.Book Two aims to build on solid right and left-hand techniques and covers further progress in notationrecognition. It begins with the introduction of quavers (eighth notes) and further focus on the free stroke (tirando). This is balanced with the need to keep the rest stroke (apoyando) solid by giving the pupil a chance to playboth melody and accompanying parts.Extensive exercises for finger 4 via chords and melody are included but the main aim is to complete the learning of the notes in first position taking in several scales and modes alongthe way. Simple open chords are also given further attention and the book concludes with coverage of chromaticism relating to the bottom three strings.A daily practice session for the completion of book two extrarepertoire and other helpful information are all available at www.thebeginnerguitarist.com.About the author: Nigel Tuffs is an instrumental teacher with more than 20 years of experience in all areas ofguitar teaching. This is the flagship book in Mel Bay's new Achieving Guitar Artistry series. Herein you will find an extensive collection of linear pieces with interesting melodic content. Frequent performance ofthese etudes will not only enhance technique but offer the Guitarist a wonderful opportunity to improve tone touch and lyrical phrasing. We suggest playing each etude at a slow tempo at first the goal being to achievea clear and beautiful tone on every note. The next objective is to develop a sense of lyrical completeness to each musical phrase. Make the phrases sing! Once you have achieved the desired quality of tone and expression increasethe tempo to work on the technique. The pieces in Linear Guitar Etudes are multi-positional. That is the player will be required to move from position to position on the fingerboard. The music ispresented in standard notation only with left-hand fingering included on the more complex passages and circled numbers to indicate the strings where certain notes and passages are to be played. These etudes sound goodon both nylon and steel-string Guitars and will be a valuable addition to the music library of any Guitarist enhancing their abilities regardless of the style of music played.

Agustin Pio Barrios Ferreyra, a Paraguayan composer and guitarist, is nowadays known as the creator of the Mangorean or Indo-American school of the Guitar. ?The name, Mangoré, was adopted in honor of the great chieftain Mangoré, an important personage of the Paraguayan jungles?.Mangoré used for his works popular folkloristic themes of South America as well as sounds of nature (?the still waters of [?] the Amazon?, ?the song of the birds?). But Magnoré also was inspired by European music: He composed gavottes, minuets and waltzes: ?It was in J.S.Bach where Barrios discovered the source of his universality [?]?.Admired by many but despised by more was his way of stringing his guitar: ?[?] the way he attacked the strings with the fingers sideward, with very little use of the fingernails?. He also invented some kind of a muffler: He put ?small balls of rubber on the Pirastro steel string?. Jesus Benites R. who collected Magnoré?s works for this edition says about him: ?Magnore is the genius of South America?. He was a strong influence for many composers and musicians, such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Manuel Ponce and Andres Segovia.
