text from Christmas Poem by George Mackay Brown. Par DAVIES PETER MAXWELL. As Master of the Queens Music, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has written a new carol for Her Majesty the Queen each Christmas since his appointment began in 2004. Kings and Shepherds is the fourth and like An Heavenly Song, Wonder Tidings and The Yule-tide Bell, will be published as part of the Schott Royal Collection.
Written for the 2008 Christmas service and performed in the Ballroom of Buckingham Palace, Kings and Shepherds is a short traditional setting of Christmas Poem by George Mackey Brown, a poet who lived near to Maxwell Davies on the Orkney Islands. A wonderful addition to the carol repertoire and ideal for amateur choirs looking to programme new pieces./ Recueil / Choeur Mixte SATB

Serenade für 13 Instrumente-An announcement in the Wiener-Zeitung read: ?Concert. Today [23 March 1784] Herr [Anton] Stadler Sr. presently in the service of His Majesty the Emperor will hold a concert for his own benefit at the Royal Imperial National Court Theatre in which among other select pieces he will present a grand work for wind-band of a quite special character composed by Herr Mozart.? That this was almost certainly four movements from the present Serenade in B-flat major K.361 is suggested by an account of the occasion published some months later which states ?Today I heard a composition by Herr Mozart in 4 movements for wind ensemble . . . comprising 13 instruments: 4 horns 2oboes 2 bassoons 2 clarinetts 2 basset horns and a contrabass viol. . . .?Much music of the serenade-divertimento-cassation-Nachtmusik type was written in a light style and intended for social occasions rather than formal concerts. In such a context K.361 is striking for its seriousness of artistic content its length (seven movements lasting nearly an hour) and its extended instrumentation (most wind-band music of the period calls for five to eight or nine players not thirteen). If the work was not conceived in the first instance as a concert work its potential as such must have been recognized early on by Mozart or Stadler.- Urtext of the New Mozart Edition- Parts (BA5331-22) and study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP312) available for sale

This anthem The Peace That Surpasseth Understanding by John Tavener was commissioned jointly by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster and the Ministry of Defence. It was first performed at a Service in Honourof the Passing of the World War One Generation in Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 11th November 2009 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh by the Choir of Westminster Abbeyconducted by James O’Donnell. COMPOSER’S NOTEIn this setting of Saint Paul’s great statement I have tried in a simple and primordial manner to suggest majesty solemnity and a radiance of peace andbliss. I have also given the music a ceremonial nature by inserting ‘Allelouias’ sounding from ‘Heaven’ (semi-chorus) gradually rising in pitch until they are answered by ‘Allelouias’ from‘The World’ (main choir). The music forms a gradual crescendo reflecting the meaning of the words. At the musical and spiritual climax the full organ sounds four chords which represent The Four Angels beforethe Throne of God. The final chord then transforms into the sacred monosyllable OM which hums around the building representing the Peace and Beatitude of God’s Presence. Duration: c. 4 minutes

Arranged for SATB chorus and Piano accompaniment. Commissioned by Gareth Malone for Series Four of BBC TV's 'The Choir' and first performed by Malone and the Military Wives' choir as part of The Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 12th November 2011 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen. A favourite for the 2011 Christmas Number One, with support from radio DJ Chris Evans who has suggested every choir in the country should sing this song, it's and nbsp - the biggest threat to X-Factor chart domination this year. The text is taken from poems, letters and prayers written by the Military Wives, selected and adapted by Paul Mealor, and a passage from the Book of John: Wherever you are, my love will keep you safe - My heart will build a bridge of light, across both time and space. Wherever you are, our hearts still beat as one, I hold you in my dreams each night, until your task is done. Light up the darkness, my wondrous star, Our hopes and dreams, my heart and yours, forever shining far. Light up the darkness, my prince of peace - May the stars shine all around you, may your courage never cease. Wherever I am, I will love you day by day, I will keep you safe, cling on to faith, along the dark, dark way. Wherever I am, I will hold on through the night - I will pray each day, a safe return, will look now to the light. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 / SATB Et Piano
