After years of several personal and creative crises, the last two years of Beethoven's life were marked by an irrepressible creative urge that was directed almost exclusively towards the string quartet genre.Of all these late works, it is the Quartet in A minor op. 132 that most impressively addresses the overcoming of the depression of the past years. The middle of the five movements is aCanzona di ringraziamentoentitled:Holy Song of Thanksgiving of a recovered person to the deity in the Lydian key.In this movement a slow introduction is followed by the heading:Feeling renewed strength. Due to the middle movement full ofdivine power, this string quartet is certainly one of Beethoven's most emotional compositions. For this new edition of the Quartet op. 132, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar consulted the autograph as well as several sets of parts corrected by Beethoven, enabling him to correct countless inconsistencies and unconvincing editorial decisions of previous editions.

Beat It is one of Michael Jackson’s most popular songs. Seen by many as a rock song, Beat It was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time”, due to the notable inclusion of guitarist Eddie van Halen, and was also awarded two Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 1984 ceremony. Since its release, the song has been covered by various artists such as Fall Out Boy, Fergie and most recently Anthony Gröger, who has made this energetic arrangement for string quartet.Beat It komt van Michael Jacksons succesvolste album Thriller.

It was the practice of Khoomii (throat singing) - following several workshops with Michael Ormiston - that first attracted me to Tuvan music. Composing this Songbook, the first in a series commissioned by the Ligeti Quartet, I took the chance to reflect on compositional questions around transcription and arrangement of existing music, and frequently found myself asking: where is the boundary between the source material and the new substance? Of course the relationship varies from piece to piece, and moment to moment: sometimes we seem to glimpse the pure source, but most of the time there are differing degrees of distance, working towards or away from it. This new version for string orchestra corresponds closely to the original quartet version, with an additional part for double basses. The traditional Tuvan songs that I have transcribed and recomposed are all known to me from the Ay Kherel CD The Music of Tuva: Throat Singing and Instruments from Central Asia (2004, Arc Music). According to the notes from that CD, this is what the songs are about:1. Dyngylday: If you have come on a horse in blue, it doesn't mean that you are the best. My heart tells me something else: my sweetheart doesn't have such a beautiful horse, but he is my darling. An alternative interpretation from Alash Ensemble (alashensemble.com): The word dyngylday is a nonsense term with no translation. The song makes good-humored fun of somebody for being a good-for-nothing.2. Eki Attar (The Best Steeds): The horse is the basis of our life. It is a magic creature. Even its step is full of music and rhythm. You may not be a horse rider, but when you hear this song you will always remember horses.3. Kuda Yry: This wedding song glorifies the strength of the groom and the beauty of his Horse.4. Ezir-Kara ('Black Eagle'): This was the name of a horse, who became a legend through his remarkable strength and speed. It is not just overtones that abound here: there are galloping rhythms aplenty, and though I am no horse rider I tried to keep the horses galloping in my imagination while composing these pieces.Christian Mason (with quotes from Ay Kherel and Alash Ensemble)World premiere of the original version: London/UK, May 10, 2016, World premiere of the string orchestra version: Clermont-Ferrand/France, October 8, 2020.

Sibelius's oeuvre contains four string quartets. They appeared over a long time span and in different phases of his professional career. Most of his early compositions were chamber music, and he composed his three earliest quartets (in E flat major (JS 184, 1885), A minor (JS 183, 1889), B flat major (Op. 4, 1890)) around his study years. They remained unprinted during his lifetime, and the string quartet in E flat major was also not performed in public. The quartet in D minor Voces intimae op. 56, on the other hand, was completed in London in the spring of 1909, and Sibelius wrote to his wife Aino: It became wonderful. Just the kind that raises a smile on one's face even at the moment of death. Voces intimae was published in the same year. Even later, Sibelius seemed to be very satisfied with his composition, for he wrote in his diary: It is generally claimed to be my best work. I do not think quite that, but it does belong among my best ones..
