Hessenberg a étudié à Leipzig avec Günther Raphael et était un chanteur dans le Bach Choir sous la direction de Karl Straube. Plus tard, il fut professeur de théorie de la musique et la composition à la Musikhochschule de Francfort. C'est particulièrement dans le domaine de la musique chorale sacré et profane qu'il créé important et souvent chantée ouvrages, parmi lesquels le célèbre motet ' O Herr mache mich zum Werkzeug deines Friedens ' (C 37176). Les paramètres de trois volets folk-song deux présents (SABar) sont composées dans un style polyphonique et conviennent même pour les petites chorales.
