Ursula Mamlok's SIX RECITAL PIECES FOR YOUNG PIANISTS, composed in 1981, as well as FOUR RECITAL PIECES FOR YOUNG PIANISTS, composed shortly afterwards in 1982, belong, no doubt, to the most fruitful and successful years of the composer.At the request of her friend, violinist and amateur pianist Lilo Glick, Ursula Mamlok wrote these pieces, which Lilo premiered at the Bennington Summer Music Festival of 1982.The exact dates of composition of each individual piece can be found in the original version of the score, showing the dates of THE RELUCTANT RAINDROP and ON THIN lCE were 10.28.1981, PASSING STORM CLOUDS and A CLARION CALL 10.29.1981 framing them, SUNRISE IN THE EAST and SUNSET IN THE WEST were added a month later on 11.23.1981. Par SPARKE PHILIP. The south-western US state of Arizona has more than its fair share of stunning landscapes, natural phenomena and National Monuments. Best known is the Grand Canyon, but there are also numerous deserts, a petrified forest, extinct volcanoes and the huge Sunset Crater. Not surprisingly, it has featured as the backdrop to many Western movies. The Painted Desert is a narrow, crescent-shaped arc about 160 miles long which begins near the Grand Canyon and varies in width from 10 to 35 miles. It is largely void of vegetation and years of erosion by wind and rain have exposed sedimentary layers of rock up to 250 million years old. Chemical differences in the various layers result in aneffect not unlike a multicoloured layer cake with contrasting hues of red, orange and pink, blue, grey and lavender creating a silent and barren landscape which looks like it has been hand-painted. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Originally written in the key of G major, Michael Lorimer has transcribed Bach's Cello Suite 1 (BWV1007) for guitar in D major, with the sixth string dropped to D. In his preface, Lorimer notes that the guitar lends itself well to transcriptions of cello music because the two instruments occupy a similar range and 'the lute-like style-brisé (broken chord) textures of this music invite performance on our modern instrument. ”Guitar transcriptions from cello literature are not new to the guitar repertoire. Although the guitar per se did not exist during Bach's time, Bach himself is known to have transcribed his own cello music for the Baroque lute. What sets Lorimer'sarrangement of Suite 1 apart and facilitates performance of this challenging but worthwhile piece, is the fact that he has provided adequate right-hand fingering and an extraordinary amount of left-hand digitation- all contributing to the musical rendition of an outstanding transcription.
