In 1988, GIA released Michael Joncas’s No Greater Love, a flexible mass setting offering cathedral-style music that was accessible to the singing assembly. Beautiful melodies enhanced by SATB choir and extensive orchestrations were the hallmark of this best-selling work. Now, Michael Joncas has revised this treasured setting using the 2010 Revised Order of Mass. The revision has a new through-composed Gloria that can be sung in unison during the Sundays of Ordinary Time, and for more festive occasions, one can add the optional instrumental and SATB choral parts. Also new to this setting are the gospel acclamation and a sung setting of the prayer of the faithful. The memorable congregational parts for the Kyrie and the Agnus Dei haven’t changed and the much-loved Holy, Holy has been adapted to accommodate the 2010 Revised Order of Mass text. The optional orchestration is now reduced and includes string quartet, flute, and oboe parts.

Containing themes of divine providence, rescue, and sustenance, this collection comes from the heart of Joncas’s own suffering due to a bout with Guillain-Barré syndrome. After his recovery, Joncas experienced a new surge of musical creativity that gave birth to In the Sight of the Angels. The lush sounds of choral singing and the elaborate instrumentation of brass, harp, flute, organ, and other instruments make In the Sight of the Angels a beautiful recording replete with psalm settings, including “Drink in the Richness of God,†“In the Sight of the Angels,†and “Till the End of My Days.†Also present are settings of the three New Testament Lukan infancy canticles—the “Canticle of Zechariah,†the “Canticle of Mary,†and the “Canticle of Simeon.†But, perhaps most appropriate in light of Joncas’s recent experiences are the songs delineating the work of the Holy Spirit, God’s breath (ruach): “All Who Are Led by the Spirit,†“Lord, Send Out Your Spirit,†and “Veni, Sancte Spiritus.†This tranquil recording has a pastoral feel. It is tender and depicts a merciful God who gives us hope in light of suffering. Joncas’s newfound wisdom resonates through this music. It is his sincere wish that those who sing it, play it, and/or hear it will grow closer to God. CONTENTS: Veni, Sancte Spiritus • Till the End of My Days • All Who are Led by the Spirit • At Jesus' Name • Canticle of Mary • Lord, Send Out Your Spirit •  Psalm 34: Drink in the Richness of God • To the Ends of Earth • Canticle of Zechariah • In the Sight of Angels • Canticle of Simeon.

Commissioned by the Maryknoll Community to celebrate its centenary of papal approval in 2011, Missa ad Gentes was composed with a particular vision – to create a Mass setting with the 2010 revised English texts representing both Maryknoll’s United States heritage as well as the diverse cultures in which Maryknoll missioners serve in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.  With each piece of the Mass, Fr. Joncas honors the musical heritage of a different culture, creating a truly unique setting celebrating the Church’s diversity. The title, meaning “Mass ‘to the peoples’†draws on the text of the Second Vatican Council’s document on missionary activities. “It is my hope that the Missa ad Gentes will assist English-speaking Roman Rite Catholics to worship with new liturgical texts, faithful to their heritage but enriched by the great diversity of languages and cultures that make up the Church Catholic.†-Michael Joncas.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duschene’s arrival in New Orleans, Michael Joncas was commissioned to write a new mass setting by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. This edition is scored for SATB voices and features instrumental parts for complete symphony orchestra. Parts may be used according to the players available in your circumstance. The mass includes optional phrases in French and Potawatomi honoring the American saint’s heritage and ministry. The mass may be sung in unison, reserving the choral and instrumental parts for holy days. While some contemporary musical settings of the “Glory to God†seem burdensome and even awkward, Joncas’s melody is absolutely delightful. The singable through-composed Gloria boasts a magnificent and manageable modulation that contributes to the triumphant nature of the piece. With songs that paint both stately majesty and pastoral elegance, God of All Beginnings is a collection of exceptional liturgical music from Michael Joncas. “A Time of Jubilee†and the title track “Praise the God of All Beginnings†have all the dignity and grandeur necessary for a solemn procession while the sweet tenderness of “Holy Mary, Full of Grace†provides a wonderful alternative to your usual Marian repertoire. “The Goodness of the Lord: Psalm 89 for the Chrism Mass†possesses rich harmonic texture, and the lush orchestration of “Sacred This Banquet,†illuminates this glorious Kwatera communion text. Practical ranges, singable melodies, and superior choral writing make this collection extremely versatile. There is something in this collection for every choir and congregation.  Contents: Christ Be Near at Either Hand • Like a Bird That Spreads Her Wings • Praise the God of All Beginnings • A Time of Jubilee • Canticle of the Three Young Men • Canticle of Mary • The Goodness of the Lord • Holy Mary, Full of Grace • O Source of All in Time and Space • We Must Glory in the Cross • Sacred This Banquet, Holy Our Feast • The Earth Is Turning Toward the Sun .
