La new musicology ne constitue pas un courant, une tendance homogène, car elle provient de sources diverses : les cultural studies britanniques, le déconstructionnisme derridien américanisé, les gender studies, les post-colonial studies, pour ne citer que quelques sources majeures. Il serait également délicat d'assigner un propos général à la new musicology, sinon l'idée que l'on doit se recentrer sur le sens, en opposition à certains courants de l'' ancienne ' musicologie, accusés à tort ou à raison d'être formalistes.
