Composer's NoteSecond Meeting was written in January 1992. The first performance took place in Stockholm in February (Bengt Rosengren oboe and Stefan Bojsten piano). The work belongs to a planned series of virtuosoduos 'meetings'. The first one (from 1982) is written for clarinet and harpsichord.Formally Second Meeting is very close to a familiar 'theme and variations' category although there are seven themes or melodies all quiteclosely related. In the autumn of the same year I decided to write a version of the piece for oboe and a small orchestra trying to remain reasonably faithful to the original (a la Ravel perhaps). The orchestral version iscalled Mimo 1).Esa-Pekka Salonen

Music Minus One Oboe-These oboe sonatas by Pepusch and Telemann are great Baroque pieces for any oboist and are perfect training ground for the instrumentalist looking to learn ensemble playing. Classic trio sonatas of their age they utilized a background of flute and basso continuo - a semi-improvised accompaniment commonly carried out by both a harpsichord and a viola da gamba the two instruments serving as a full bass line supporting the other instruments. The oboist is here afforded a wonderful opportunity to play this beautiful music in association with the wonderful Rameau Trio. Not too difficult these pieces are perfect for the intermediate oboist or for the beginner looking toward amoderate challenge. Listen to and study master oboist Virginia Brewer performing with the Trio then you take your place with this group for one of the most marvelous experiences in chamber music - the Baroque trio sonata. Includes a printed guide to period ornamentation complete with musical examples. A four movement suite. The Couperin family's influence extended over five generations and was as important to French music as the Bachs' was to German music. François 1668-1733 (known as 'le Grand') was like his father organist of St. Gervais and in 1693 became organist to the King at Versailles. He excelled as a composer of keyboard music and produced an instruction book L'Art de Toucher le Clavecin which is valuable for the light it throws on contemporary practice in harpsichord playing. J. S. Bach knew and admired François Couperin's music and the two did correspond. Alas the letters disappeared when (according to an article in Grove) they were used as lidsforjampots!

Version 2010-“Books talk to each other” - Umberto Eco’s statement could just as easily apply to music as Les Citations for Oboe Harpsichord Double Bass and Percussion by Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) brilliantly proves. Written in 1991 the score was reworked by the composer for the Festival d’Auvers-sur-Oise where the new version premiered in June 2010. The origin of this work goes back to For Aldeburgh 85. Written for the 75th birthday of singer Peter Pears the piece takes up a fragment of Peter Grimes whose leading role had been written by Britten for the beloved tenor. Dutilleux adds a page titled FromJanequin to Jehan Alain in which appears a song from the Renaissance composer “L’espoir que j’ay d’acquerir vostre grace” used by J. Alain in his Variations for Organ on a theme by Clément Janequin. The junction between the two parties is made through an Interlude that introduces the “wolf’s moan” theme from the ballet Le Loup (The Wolf) composed by Dutilleux in 1953 for the troupe of Roland Petit. This subtle tangle of quotations forms a shimmering and sensual work where the uniqueness of an authentic artist powerfully asserts itself.
