This accessible ballad, penned during Thad's later years in Denmark, is a rubato study in full-band expression. It opens with fortissimo brass, transitions to a quiet midsection showcasing saxes/woodwinds, then recaps the strong opening before going out very quietly with soprano (or alto) sax and trombones only in the final bars. No improvised solos are required. Duration 4:00.

Fábulas (Fables), the first work of Carlos Rodriguez to be published by Pembroke Music (a division of Carl Fischer), was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. It was premiered by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen on April 10, 1996. The piece, an extended one-movement structure involving a large orchestra with a very full percussion section, is concerned with narrative forms in purely symphonic terms, ie. - without an actual program. The musical sequence of the piece, in three continuously evolving sections lasting about 15 minutes overall, is derived from the very opening 12-note string chord arrayed in a pattern of perfect 5ths and minor seconds extending over four octaves. The central core of the piece, subtitled Six Anagrams, involves a highly unusual and original application of the 12-note concept. Each pitch in the row is assigned a letter so that the row spells out the phrase voice leading. The six anagrams are re-orderings of this sequence into six new rows, which are then subjected to canonic development. The resulting sophisticated game provides Fábulas, with a rare degree of musical coherence. A fascinating work that rewards detailed analysis, Fábulas, is so brilliantly scored that it dazzles on its own terms, as sound, even without detailed examination of its elaborate underpinnings.

Gatti, a contemporary companion of Leopold and W. A. Mozart, composed this Concertone, that is published here for the first time, in 1769 for the opening of the Teatro Bibiena in Mantua, where the young Mozart, only five weeks later, gave his second, well-received concert in Italy. Not only the charming solos (apart from the two violins there is also a cello and an oboe) remind us of Mozart's composition of the same name that was composed four years later (KV190). Score and part available separately - see item CA.9710300.

This celebratory and dramatic rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner arranged for brass and percussion by Sean O'Loughlin has become a favorite of both the Oregon Symphony and Baltimore Symphony brass players, being played at sporting events including Portland Trailblazers NBA basketball games, Baltimore Orioles baseball games, and Baltimore Ravens football games. With fanfare flourishes and colorful touches, this grand arrangement gives each section an opportunity to play the melody, making for a truly dynamic experience. In the winter of 2009 my good friend David Bamonte, who is the assistant principal trumpet in the Oregon Symphony, asked if I had written an arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner for brass. The result is this version of The Star-Spangled Banner that was premiered at a Portland Trailblazers NBA basketball game at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. It has enjoyed several performances at those games over the years, and the team has been led to victory after each performance. Coincidence? Over the past decade, this same arrangement has gone on to performances by the Baltimore Symphony brass and percussion at the Baltimore Orioles baseball games and the Baltimore Ravens football games. The arrangement itself was written to showcase the extraordinary talent and sound of the Oregon Symphony Brass players. Percussion parts were added later for an expanded performance. A brief opening and closing fanfare was added to set the stage for the tone and grandeur of the music. Throughout the arrangement, each section gets the opportunity to play the melody while adding some interesting colors to support the iconic anthem. It is instantly majestic and celebratory in nature and a fitting tribute to our great nation.

Language: German/English. Text: Birkmann, Christoph.
It only became apparent a few years ago that the text of the soprano cantata Falsche Welt, dir trau ich nicht came from the collection Gott-geheiligten Sabbaths-Zehnden by the Leipzig theology student and Bach pupil Christoph Birkmann, printed in 1728 in Nuremberg. Birkmann was probably therefore the author of the text. The cantata was written for the 23rd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 24 November 1726 in the year of its first performance. As in other cantatas in the first annual cycle, Bach chose an instrumental sinfonia as the opening movement - here the first movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto. The soprano soloist has two recitatives and two arias, in which the falsehood of the world is juxtaposed with trust in God. The cantata text is rounded off with the first verse of the chorale In dich hab ich gehoffet, scored for four-part chorus, as is usual with Bach. With the use of two horns and three oboes added to the string ensemble, the cantata has colorful and varied orchestration. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3105200.

Hailstork’s beautifully lilting SICILIANA for solo English horn is actually structured as a recitative and aria: a dramatic prelude serves as a soliloquy with question-like pauses, teasing our ears forward. This opening unfolds into a gorgeous rendering of the traditional 12/8 dance form, full of soaring melodies and elegant arabesques. SICILIANA’s technical demands are within the reach of students looking for unaccompanied contest repertoire, while the expressive potential is enticing for advanced players in any setting. This 6-minute work has been recorded for Navona Records by Elizabeth Starr Masoudnia of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Winner of the 2011 Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Timothy Wilson's Avidity is a dynamic endorsement of the competition's aim to provide exciting new brass music for schools, conservatoires and professional ensembles. Generated by the composer's skilful invention and purposeful structure, its fast-moving six-minute sonata form for brass quintet delivers the musical counterpart of the eagerness and expectancy implied by its title. In the outer sections of Avidity strongly accented rhythms command the attention, with arresting unisono phrases balanced by effervescent staccato passages. The level of energy is sustained through unexpected rhythmic twists and turns distorting the pulse of the music, with striking crescendi and strong dynamic contrasts that are a particular strength of the brass idiom. There is respite however, with two episodes of solemn, chorale-like material whose arched lines sound no less well on the five instruments. But the last word is with the opening theme, returning with unstoppable momentum and concluding Avidity with a decisive cadence of abrupt repeated chords.
