(+)
Pièceby Gabriel Fauré is a piece for Flute Oboe or Violin with Piano accompaniment. This romantic piece in A only features one movement. Small it is really melodious and quite slow: “Adagio molto tranquillo”. Rated as quite difficult upper-intermediate players will enjoy playing it for recitals. The book includes an insert with the instrument only part. Gabriel Fauré was a French composer organist pianist and teacher. He is one of the most important composers of his generation with pieces such as 'Pavane' or 'Requiem'.

The Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in G minor, HWV 287 is a first edition.
Although published in the Handel Complete Edition, IV/12 for oboe in 1971, the work has for many years been considered spurious because no contemporary source existed. This concerto was thought to have been written by an amateur musician who borrowed material from Handel's works written or published after 1733. The situation changed drastically when a contemporary set of parts for the concerto, originally copied in Stuttgart for the Erbprinz Friedrich Ludwig von Württemberg, were found in 1993. These parts, copied about 1720, show that the composer borrowed from this concerto for compositions such as the organ concerto HWV 296a, the concerto grosso op. 6 No.11, HWV 329 as well as the trio sonata in G minor, HWV 390. The parts are titled Concerto à 5 for 1 Flut Travers e Hautb , 2 Violino , 1 Alto Viola Col Basso continuo. This new critical edition by Terence Best is the first to make use of this new source. The score contains a lengthy preface and critical commentary.
- First ever publication making use of the new source material
- Informative preface describing the origin and genesis of the work
- A major new work for flute players / Partitions classique / Bois / Hautbois / BARENREITER

Bach’s Arioso was arranged in many different forms by the composer. First written as a Violin or Oboe Concerto in G minor now lost it was then transposed and re-used as the Sinfonia to the Cantata BWV 156 in F major first performed in 1729. A much embellished version was then used as the middle movement of his Harpsichord Concerto in F minor BWV 1056 published in 1738. It has been arranged here for Flute with Piano accompaniment by George Barrère. J. S. Bach (1685-1750) was a German Baroque composer who is revered for the originality and skill of his contrapuntal and harmonic techniques. He spent most of his life working as an organist andchoirmaster but was also employed as a composer a many different Royal Courts.

for Woodwind Quintet-These two extraordinary works of late Mozart KV 594 and KV 608 were both composed to fulfill a commission for a memorial exhibit in Vienna to be played in a “mechanical clock organ.” The term “fantasy” or“fantasia” came to be affixed to these works later and is more descriptive and less cumbersome than the term Mozart listed in his own catalogue “Ein Stüke für ein Orgelwerk in ein Uhr.” They are also variouslytitled “Adagio und Allegro in f für ein Orgelwerk” and “Allegro und Andante (Fantasie in f) für eine Orgelwaltze.”The first of these composed between the monumental String Quintet in D and the Piano Concertoin Bb KV 595 is an A-B-A form comprised of an f minor Adagio opening and closing with a contrapuntal Allegro at its heart. KV 608 is more complicated opening with an f minor section reminiscent of a French Overture followed by a fugue in fminor then an Andante aria followed by a return to the opening and then a more complex version of the fugue.Despite the frustration that Mozart expressed (in a letter to Constanze) with the sound world of these mechanical devices KV 594and 608 are remarkable works which stand at an intersection incorporating what he learned about counterpoint studying at the foot of Bach while looking ahead to the emotional and harmonic poignancy of Schubert.

A four movement suite. The Couperin family's influence extended over five generations and was as important to French music as the Bachs' was to German music. François 1668-1733 (known as 'le Grand') was like his father organist of St. Gervais and in 1693 became organist to the King at Versailles. He excelled as a composer of keyboard music and produced an instruction book L'Art de Toucher le Clavecin which is valuable for the light it throws on contemporary practice in harpsichord playing. J. S. Bach knew and admired François Couperin's music and the two did correspond. Alas the letters disappeared when (according to an article in Grove) they were used as lidsforjampots!

Programme Note WHIRLS´ WORLD (1970) for wind quintet. 'Whirl´s World' was composed in 1970 as one of a series of works which explored the so-called musical ´difference-phenomenon´. This term (which I coined in connection with a series of lectures in California that year) indicates a motivic duplicity in which two - often very simple - melodic ideas come ´out of phrase´ with each other giving rise to a course of constantly changing conditions. In Whirl´s World the difference phenomenon is heard from the beginning where a three-note motif and a four-note motif are set against each other. It all proceeds lake a lightning-fast series of chess moves; first notenumber 1 of the three-note motif is moved then note number 1 of the four-note motif thereafter note number 2 of the three-note motif - and so on. This fast opening flows into a slow section in which the differences now appear as ´fluctuations´ between very closely related tones (of which one is sung by the musician). There is only one movement built up as an organic growth from slow to furiously fast whirling and back again to slow which can be heard as ´slow-motion whirls´ as a water-world of ripples and bubbles. All this is framed by the introduction described above and a corresponding conclusion in which the movement is now descending ending in the resolute bass full-stop. Per Norgård
