Italian composer Ottorino Respighi wrote several operas, ballet music, chamber music, piano and organ works as well as Cantatas in a stylemuch influenced by the French Impressionists mixed with his uniquepersonal style. The Japanese arranger Yoshihiro Kimura has skilfullyadapted Respighi?s symphonic poem Fontane di Roma for concertbands of an advanced level. Ottorino Respighi was one of the most well known Italian composersfrom the beginning of the twentieth century. His style is influencedby the French impressionists, Rimsky-Korsakov and Richard Strauss, but with his very own touch. Respighi’s fame is mostly based on hisinstrumental works, especially the orchestral triptych of symphonicpoems, which included Feste Romane. Not much is known about the origin of Huntingtower, except for the fact that this ballad was composed in 1931 by the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936), commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman and the American Bandmaster Association, and was premiered on 17 April 1932 at a concert in memory of John Philip Sousa in Washington D.C. It is not even certain whether Respighi arranged the work himself, or left this to someone else. Huntingtower is the name of a castle in Scotland, where Respighi spent some time. It is possible that this ballad contains his musical impressions of his stay there. The orchestration on this CD, made by Franco Cesarini in 1987, is an adaptation ofthe work to the demands of the contemporary concert band.

Between 1917 and 1931 Ottorino Respighi harmonized and instrumented twelve works from the 16th- and 17th-century Italian and French lute literature and arranged the pieces into three 4-movement suites, under the title Antiche danze ed arie. He instrumented the first suite for chamber orchestra, the second for symphony orchestra and the third for strings. He also published six of the twelve movements in a piano arrangement. This publication in the Leggiero series is a 5-movement selection from the three suites, in making this free transcrip-tion, Arpad Pejtsik took account of both the orchestral and the piano versions. The level of difficulty of the works corresponds to the general demands of the series. The viola part may also be played on a third violin.
