Saint-Saëns also wrote several such pieces for Violin, Cello, and Horn. His only Romance for Flute was composed in 1871, shortly after the Société nationale de musique had been founded. It was premiered in this new forum for Piano music and chamber works a year later, too. In spite of its brevity, the piece contains numerous harmonic and melodic refinements, which rapidly made it popular among flautists – both in the original setting with Piano accompaniment as well as in the later orchestral version. En 1849, Schumann fit cadeau d’oeuvres de musique de chambre à trois instruments à vent: la clarinette avec les «Trois pièces de fantaisie» op. 73, le cor avec l’«Adagio et Allegro» op. 70 ainsi que le hautbois avec les fameuses «Trois romances» op. 94 présentées ici. La première romance adopte le ton plaisant d’une ballade en la mineur. La deuxième, en la majeur, s’apparente à une romance sans paroles. Avec ses motifs d’appel et ses arpèges au piano, le finale évoque les poèmes alors très en vogue du nord de l’Europe. Composées en décembre 1849, ces romances furent offertes par Schumann à sa femme Clara en guise de cadeau de Noël. Ce manuscrit n’est pas parvenu à la postérité, mais nous avons pu nous appuyer sur des esquisses manuscrites pour la préparation de l’édition urtext. Celle-ci corrige quelques erreurs de la première édition de 1851.
