To Henk van Lijnschooten. Par DE HAAN JACOB. This work builds a musical bridge between the nations of the European Union. In this composition each country is represented by a fragment of its national anthem. The listener will continually be surprised by the creative way the national anthems are presented. The national anthems of the nations that have become part of the EU in 2004 have already been included in this piece. Because the fragments follow each other and complement each other in a logical way, this work does not sound like a regular medley but rather like a varied concert work with interesting elements of folklore. For most of the national anthems Jacob de Haan has chosen a minor key, which gives this work an extraemotional, sometimes melancholic overtone. / Niveau : 4 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

Oper in 3 Akten. Par HASSE JOHANN ADOLF. Hasse's Cleofide of 1731 can be regarded as the zenith of his creative output – not least of all because he integrated several of his greatest arias from earlier works into this opera. The theme from antiquity 'Alexander's conquests in India' was perfectly suited to flatter August the Strong, a rather unsuccessful commander-in-chief, who at that moment was occupied with the reorganization of his armies. For performance at the Court of Dresden, Metastasio's original libretto was reworked by Michelangelo Boccardi. As a result, the title of the opera was changed from 'Alessandro nell' Indie' to 'Cleofide' and Faustina Bordoni, the prima donna and wife of Johann AdolfHasse, became the protagonist of the story. Musically, the opera reflected the style of the time. Hasse's expressive and natural style was admired and appreciated by the public professional musicians alike. The vocal parts were 'tailor-made' for the singers and in performing this work the outstanding soloists and the orchestra could shine. Hasse always tried to get the utmost from his musicians and in the case of 'Cleofide' he achieved a 100% success. The Carus edition of 'Cleofide, ' which has been published as a part of the Hasse-Werkausgabe, is the very first printed edition of this work. It is based primarily on the original parts used for the first performance in 1731 and presents both an accurate musicological rendering of the sources as well as a practical performance edition. / Opéra-opérette / Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur, 2 Flûtes Traversières, 2 Hautboi

Instrumentation: piano Edition: score Publisher: Eberhard Mayer OEuvres pour piano/Klaviermusik/Piano Music Edition en 10 recueils/Edition in 10 Bänden/Edition in 10 volumes Volume 1: Femmes de Légende Editor: Eberhard Mayer Item no.: fue 4180 Difficulty: medium ISMN: 979-0-50012-918-9 Contents: Mélisande, Desdémona, Ophelie, Viviane, Phœbé, Omphale und Salomé The pieces for piano represent a great stylistic variety. One gets the impression that Mel Bonis may have intended to give a summary of musical development, not quoting historic styles but adapting the past through her personal tone and to translate it into contemporary musical language. The first volume includes an original series of musical portraits dedicated to legendary women, where Mel Bonis explores the enigmatic feminine universe. „Femmes de légende“ A collection we have called “Femmes de légende” contains seven piano pieces by Mel Bonis named after women whose fates have become legendary. They have not always been arranged in this way. The first piece, “Mélisande”, was published separately by Alphonse Leduc in 1898. In 1909, a collection called “Trois pièces pour piano” (Three pieces for the piano), dedicated to the composer Paul Locard and which included “Phœbé”, “Viviane” and “Salomé”, was published by Leduc. In 1913, “Mélisande” was added to the four last pieces for a final collection called “Cinq pièces”. “Omphale” appeared in a Berlin edition “Signale für die musikalische Welt” in 1910. As to “Ophélie”, it was never published in Mel Bonis’ lifetime and we discovered a manu-script in 1997 without any indication at all of when it was writ-ten. “Ophélie” was first published by the publishing house Ar-miane in Versailles in 1998. Mélisande (1898) Written before Debussy’s famous opera, Mel Bonis’ piano piece “Mélisande” was also inspired by the poet Maeterlinck (Mélisande, 1893). These short pages of magical harmonies, of radi-ant impressionist colours use music to describe Mélisande’s hair as described by Pelleas: “your hair and its beautiful light... It escapes everywhere, it shivers, it shakes, it trembles in my hand like a golden bird.” This piece enjoyed quite a success in Mel Bonis’ lifetime. She noted of it “my favourite” in the margin of her hand-written catalogue. Desdémona (1913) The female heroine in Shakespeare’s “Othello” inspired Mel Bonis to write a nostalgic piece with a fairly easy, rather classical beginning, a kind of romance without words, of great elegance and of a deep and melancholic beauty. Ophélie Ophelia, the lover of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is a deeply melan-cholic character who goes mad and drowns in mysterious cir-cumstances. Ophelia inspired the poet Rimbaud and the painter Millais – each of them created a masterpiece. Mel Bonis too evokes images of water, sadness and death in music for a third work of art. With its delicate and chilling beauty and also with its moments of passion, this impressionist piece - the work which owes most to Debussy - calls for great intelligence when performed. Viviane (1909) The figure of the fairy of the lake is musically described here in a well-structured, many-facetted piece; first of all, the initial dancing theme has an air of the “salon” about it, typical of its time, evoking the fairy’s charm, her smile. Then follow succes-sions of majestic chords and fluent harmonies which represent the underwater castle and the fairy’s power. This piece is easily approachable. Phœbé (1909) The sister of Phoebus, the sun, symbolises the moon, the night, chastity. The piece creates an impression of night. Steeped in twilight, languor and a sense of immense space, the atmosphere is one of unreality. This feeling of alienation is reinforced by the incoherence of rhythm between the two hands. Salomé (1909) Inspired by the Orient, Mel Bonis creates a very original musical illustration of the biblical character of Salome. She is characterised by shifting moods in which slow syncopes follow light glissandos, and urgent, mysterious psalmodies accompany sensual melopeias, where surprising tempo varia-tions lead to outbreaks of violence. With its relatively difficult beginning, this piece is especially interesting from the viewpoint of research into interpretation. Omphale (1910) The queen of Lydia is a female character from the violent depths of Greek mythology. This powerful female is described here with glittering sensuality and Oriental subtlety. The impressive work shows a complex structure both in harmony and rhythm, it is a lively and rich work which calls for much thought and great virtuosity on the performer’s part. “Omphale” was awarded a prize for composition by the Berlin magazine “Signale für die musikalische Welt” in 1910.

Par L'ESTRANGE ALEXANDER (Arr.). Early One Morning, a bittersweet lyric with a deceptively upbeat melody, tells of false promises and deception. It is here given a rather melancholic treatment, ending simply and sadly, as it began. You can hear the men promising to be ever faithful in bars 56–63, underneath the girls’ plaintive reproach.
This piece is part of the Faber Choral Singles series, offering a selection of beautifully crafted arrangements in a diversity of musical styles. Par CORP RONALD. Among the UK's most noted choral composers and conductors, Ronald Corp does not hesitate to bring his own musical vision to a much-loved poem by the sixteenth-century lutenist songwriter and 'Doctor of Physick' Thomas Campion, following the example not only of Campion himself but also of Charles Wood and Hubert Parry. Eschewing the manner of Parry's resonant polyphony for a simple harmonised setting in a flexible verbal rhythm reflecting the measure of the words, this is a heartfelt plea for spiritual release uttered in a quietly elegiac tone, in which the serenity of the entreaty rather than its pathos is to the fore./ Feuillet / SATB a Cappella

Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Amongst Rameau?s stage works which have come down to us in two main versions, such as ?Dardanus? (1739, 1744), ?Platée? (1745, 1749) and ?Zoroastre? (1749, 1756), none fell into oblivion for as long a period as ?Castor et Pollux?. After the work had been premiered in 1737, not until 1754 did Rameau decide to revise it. He asked his librettist ?Gentil-Bernard? to add an act to the tragedy and to give more weight to the brotherly friendship between Castor and Pollux. The main plot remains very similar to the one of 1737, aside from the fact that the sisters Télaïre and Phébé no longer are in love - the one with Castor the other with Pollux - but rather both with Castor which is the reason why Phébé is jealous of Télaïre. Already at the beginning of the first act Pollux relinquishes his love of Télaïre to the benefit of Castor. Castor, however, is killed by Linceus and finds himself in Hades. Pollux commits to saving his brother, sacrifices his immortality and declares his willingness to take Castor?s place in Hades so that his brother and Télaïre may be reunited. Jupiter, moved by this sacrifice, frees Pollux and bestows the couple immortality by giving them a place in the zodiac. Following the editorial principles of the ?Opera omnia Rameau? (and in contrast to the 1903 edition by August Chapuis issued within the old Rameau series), both versions of ?Castor et Pollux?, the version of 1737 (OOR IV.3) and the present version of 1754 (OOR IV.23), are published in two separate volumes in their entirety. Owing to the discovery of the original performance material, today preserved at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, the second version of 1754, which up until today was in the shadow of the 1737 version, can now be presented with its more tightly woven plot in all its vigor and dramatic momentum. This edition is enriched with twelve additions which enable the performance of the 1763-1764 version when the work was restaged. / Date parution : 2023-06-16/ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Homage to Anish Kapoor and his sculpture 'Marsyas'. Par PART ARVO. Arvo Pärt about Lamentate: 'Lamentate is music for piano solo and orchestra. With respect to its form, however, the composition cannot really be described as a typical piano concerto. I chose the piano to be the solo instrument because it fixes our attention on something that is 'one'. This 'one' could be a person, or perhaps a first-person narrative. Just as the sculpture leaves the viewer with a light and floating impression in spite of its overwhelming size, the piano, as a large instrument, allowed me to create a sphere of intimacy and warmth that no longer seems anonymous or abstract. Overall, it could be said that my work is marked by two diametrically opposed moods. By way of slight exaggeration, I would characterize these two poles as being 'brutal-overwhelming' and 'intimate-fragile'. The two characters are not simply placed opposite one another, much rather being left to develop themselves in a conflict that runs throughout the entire work.'/ Répertoire / Piano et Orchestre

Fassung Ii. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach’s lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform anauthentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach’s direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the “standard” version which is well known today. J. S. Bach's Johannes Passion BWV 245 for SATB and Piano. Par HESKETH KENNETH. In Danceries , by Kenneth Hesketh, the melodies themselves are a mixture of old and new. Where the old occurs it has been adapted in mood and composition and is often interspersed with completely new material. The contemporary harmonies and rhythms bring a breath of new into these themes and add drama to the suite. The first movement, Lull Me Beyond Thee , is gentle and lilting, almost a barcarole, this movement is very much a reverie. The original tune had the name Poor Robin's Maggot , a rather disconcerting title. Maggot, however, in seventeenth-century parlance meant whim or fancy. The second, Catching of Quails , is a colourful, buoyant scherzo on an original melody. The thematic material is shuttled around the band to contrast with full-blooded tuttis. The last few bars fade to almost nothing, before a final surprise! My Lady's Rest is a tender pavane, also on an original melody, with Moorish leanings. Beautiful solo passages, expressive contrapuntal writing and warm tuttis provide an opportunity to show off the most lyrical of playing. The final movement, Quodling's Delight is a clever combination of the 17th century melody, Goddesses , with an original contrasting melody, creating a rousing and exuberant finale to the work. / Niveau : Assez Facile / Répertoire / Brass Band

Par OKAZAKI MILES. This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. Beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique and the exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. It is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. Part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. It then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. This is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. Part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation. Part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in 'Symmetrical Picking, ' a method based on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. The focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. It is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. The study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. This begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing two simultaneous tempos. The book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playing one rhythm against another. Plain English is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak English or prefer to think visually. This approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. The main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): 'Even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. The amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. For this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player 'could' do, rather than what the player 'should' do. The principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else's. The ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. Pick and choose the studies that seem interesting - there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. If any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. Its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives. Plain English is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds ofillustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak English or prefer to think visually. This approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. The main idea of the book is described/ Méthode / Guitare

10 Christmas Songs For Electric Guitar. Every year it's the same thing: When the sparkling sounds of strings and flutes were heard and classic Christmas carols were played, the electric guitar player better left his instrument at home and rather helped himself to grandma's Christmas biscuits. Enough of that! With these original and authentic arrangements for electric guitar, any old-fashioned Christmas biscuit becomes a rock-laden rum truffle - true to the motto 'Sharper the axe [originally: Sweeter the bells?] never sounded than on Christmas day!'.

| Two Nocturnes (DOBRZYNSKI
IGNACY FELIKS) Piano solo [Sheet music] PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)

Par DOBRZYNSKI IGNACY FELIKS. Ignacy Feliks Dobrzynski wrote eight nocturnes for piano. Five of them were published in 1833–1834 in two books as Opp. 21 and 24, while the remainder appeared in various occasional collections issued much later.
The Nocturne in A major was written in 1846 and belongs to the group of works composed by Dobrzynski during his tour of German cities. That tour was designed to increase the composer’s popularity and boost his finances. Besides concerts and meetings promoting Dobrzynski’s music, the ‘marketing campaign’ also included the publication of his new salon miniatures in particular cities. This Nocturne appeared in print in Berlin as Op. 52, together with a short mazurka constituting a transcription of the earlier song ‘Gdzie lubi’ (‘A fickle maid’). The form of this piece is based on an A-B-A1 scheme typical of the genre, with a quite elaborate epilogue. In section A, the composer based the melody on a one-bar motif in mazurka rhythm, which he combined with a bass led in widely spread chords, often used in nocturnes. He thus obtained a specifically idyllic mood. The sonorities, the type of melody and texture and, above all, the ornaments that appear as the work progresses bring to mind the early work of Fryderyk Chopin. The chordal section B, of lively expression, in the key of F sharp minor and a uniform triple rhythm, triggers associations with the middle section of Chopin’s Nocturne in A flat major, Op. 32 No. 2. After a short bridge, the reprise comprises a reiteration of the opening part of section A, which then passes into the epilogue, in which the composer splices motifs from both contrasting sections.
It is difficult to date the second Nocturne published here and to establish the circumstances surrounding its composition. It was published posthumously (in 1868, in Warsaw), in the Album Pamiatkowe IG.F. Dobrzynskiego (‘Souvenir album of I. F. Dobrzynski’), which also contained two mazurkas, two songs and an excerpt from his incidental music for the play Konrad Wallenrod arranged for four hands. These compositions were not previously published and probably come from private collections. The Nocturne carries a dedication to Miss Wanda Miecznikowska. Determining the principal key of this work is rather problematic, since it falls into two tonally and expressively contrasting sections, divided by a lengthy caesura. An agitated, emotional episode in F minor (in A-B-A1 form, section B in A flat major), ending with a distinct conclusion, is followed, rather unexpectedly, by completely new material in the key of F major; adhering to a slower tempo and of very restrained expression, it serves as a sort of post scriptum, a lengthy and calming musical commentary to the foregoing segment. One may even gain the impression that this Nocturne is essentially a diptych consisting of two separate ‘songs without words’. Judging by its style, which is close to the lyric writing of Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy or John Field, with elements of the style brillant, this work could have been written earlier than the Nocturne in A major. One may also discern here a certain melodic-rhythmic similarity to the above-mentioned Nocturne in A flat major by Chopin.
Both these Dobrzynski mazurkas could make interesting additions to the repertoire of both professional pianists and more advanced amateurs interested in nineteenth-century salon music. They may also enrich the programmes of concerts and broadcasts, particularly those devoted to Polish music, and also be included on the curricula of secondary schools of music.
The present edition was based on the first editions. The proposed fingering in both works and the pedalling in the Nocturne in A major are entirely the work of the editors; other editorial performance markings are given in brackets. / Répertoire / Piano
