Le compositeur, chef d’orchestre et critique musical Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) fut un des plus grands innovateurs et plus éminents représentants du romantisme musical français. La sémillante ouverture du Carnaval romain (1844), reprend quelques thèmes de l’opéra malchanceux Benvenuto Cellini et notamment le duo initial (Acte I) et la grande scène du Carnaval (Acte II). Lorsque Benvenuto Cellini fut offert au public parisien en 1838, l’oeuvre fut conspuée. Au bout de quelques représentations, l’opéra fut abandonné, mais son ouverture connut un immense succès. La frénésie du bref passage introductif est absorbée par une phase lente. L’ Allegro qui suitdéchaîne la liesse du Carnaval.
